GoldenEye 64. That's the only FPS I like (I suppose that should make me like Perfect Dark too, but I've never really played it, and Bond's not in it). I don't know why, but somehow it has something that makes it so much more fun to play than the others (Quake, CS, *coughturokcoughcough* etc). Could be similar reasons why I despise all racing games but Mario Kart (and especially Mario Kart 64). I guess the music might play a big part...

I'd pit any PC FPS player against any console FPS player any day of the week.

Fact is PC mouselook is far more accurate than any of the current controllers could ever hope to be.

*Edit - That said the Half Life series, Counterstrike, and Battlefield are my favorite FPS.

  1. Perfect Dark
  2. Halo 1
  3. Goldeneye
  4. Halo 2
However, my friend has been having me play UT2004 lately, and while I'm not used to PC games at all, I find myself enjoying it more than Halo 2, and is at least on par with Halo 1.

And I have a question: Is it easier to go from console to PC or PC to console? And, does skill in one type help in the other?

For me it's a question of what makes a good shooter.

1) No annoying boss monsters. You know the twats. You slog through the level only to meet Mr Invincible with more hits than YHWH. It's annoying and dumb. So thumbs up to Halo which of course, has no bosses.

2) A fun range of weapons. I like lots of options. Unreal Tournament with its wacky weaponry. The Jedi knight series also takes this with it's force powers options.

3) Every weapon having it's place. This is where the JK series loses out. Everything is pretty much second place to the lightsaber. But that's not a big issue since you are a Jedi and it's all about whacking bad guys with the glowy stick. Best game for this was ST:Elite Forces. Every gun was good.

4) Fun. Is it fun and would you play it again? And again? For me Halo and Jedi Academy win this one.

So in the end, I'ld go with Halo and Jedi Academy.

No love for the Marathon Trilogy? The best Mac-based shooter out there and a legend among games. Plus its got a cool set of shotguns. The WSTE-M Combat Shotgun, chews through ammo like a worm in dirt.

I must mention, first of all Deus Ex, one of the best games I've ever played. Sure, not a pure FPS, but you don't play it for the combat, even though its pretty fun too.

Now, I'll just list series, since individual games would be way too long, and I generally like most games (if not all) in a series. Also note that Tomb Raider isn't in my list. :P

All Bungie FPSes
Doom (yes, I loved Doom 3, its probably the only game/movie to ever really scare me)
Dark Forces and Jedi Knight
Duke Nukem
Quake
Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon
Half Life, Counterstrike
Medal of Honour
Republic Commando
Far Cry

Hmm... that's all that comes to mind at once, though there's probably more. I generally like all the better FPSes. Now, with every other genre, I tend to be far more stringent. :)

Bungie games (with Halo 2 taking last place on the list)
Half-Life 1 and 2

Farcry was an excellent FPS, but I'm not sure it belongs on the list, because I haven't had any urge to replay it.

And for nostalgia's sake, Dark Forces, the first FPS I ever played through from beginning to end. I'd had experiences with DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D, but not the entire games.

I haven't been impressed with recent FPSs. Oldschool favourites are G64 and PD, of course - the greatest of the console shooters. I like plenty of HL2 and UT2k4 mods, too, but those actual games are terrible.

SWAT 4, while a bit odd sometimes, is a lot of fun. Pepperballs to the face, bitches! Why doesn't it have irons? Who the fuck knows.

Basically, anything where strafe speed is lower than running speed and there's a nice mix of non-conefired weapons and I'm sold.

Incorrect. Mouselook is far more accurate and precise. Controllers are so inaccurate that the highest rated FPS games on console in recent years all use auto-aim. Mouselook is accurate and fast.

Remove auto-aim from controlers and pit the controler against a mouselook player. Mouselook will win almost every single time. Mouselook allows the average player to rival the best controller players.

Neither Halo or Halo 2 make my list. Halo fails to make the list because it was released 2 years too late and there was no cooperative play. A travesty for a Bungie game. Halo 2 doesn't make the list because it hasn't been released yet and currently Bungie says they have absolutely no plans to release it.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are easy choices.

Starsiege Tribes and Tribes 2 are very good games.

Quake, the original. It started online FPS play as we know it today and set new standards. It was the first 3d game.

Counter Strike (Source and Condition Zero are all counted together with this). Good online play, a nice ballance between playability and realism.

Rainbow Six 1&2. R6-3 doesn't cut it because Red Storm Entertainment sold out.

Ghost Recon (and add-ons). GR2 never got released, so it can't make the list.

Desert Combat (not BF1942). Good mod on BF1942. DC has very good game play and good ballance.

Doom 3 (and add-on). One of the few games that could really scare me. Sure it used cheap ways of doing this, but its hard to scare people else wise. Good story, good game play, excelent graphics.

Max Payne and Max Payne 2. Great game play, good graphics, great story.

Serious Sam is a lot of fun, along with the regulars like Halo and Half Life.

Shout out to my home boy UT2K4 as well.

EDIT: A curse upon my soul for forgetting the peak and all-time greatest of FPS gaming, GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

Wait, as opposed to the ever-precise JOYSTICK aiming style?

Bro, put together two people of equal skill, one with a joystick and 1 with a mouse. The guy with the mouse will win every time, I garuantee it.

My friends and I still play Goldeneye 64 to this day. While I liked Perfect Dark's single player better than Goldeneye's single player, I find the multiplayer on Goldeneye so much more fun (although I'm not entirely sure why). Honorable mention goes to the first Turok game, as it was the very first FPS I ever played and I still like it today- although the sequels are among the worst games I've ever played.

As for PC, I like Battlefield, Battlefront, and Unreal. I've never been into Quake or Doom. The original Unreal Tournament was awesome. That's about it.
