I heard her comment that she couldn't have quite as much fun being famous after being in Star Wars because she had to be warry of guys who would just like to brag that they nailed Princess Leia.

As for her acting career. I'm not sure she was ever all that interested in being an actress. She was still good in the bit parts I saw remember seeing her in.

well, Fisher obviously isn't angry at the series anymore because she did commentaries for the DVD set.

While we're on Carrie Fisher flicks...don't forget "Under The Rainbow." Fuck, I want to buy it on DVD now, just so I can watch Billy Barty and Carrie in the Freezer scene! :!: :P

Profit?

Anyhow, I read in a local magazine (The Wave)'s interview that Portman was okay with being known for being in SW. I'll dig out the quote some other time.

That really sucks for him. I have to say that as bad as he was in ROTS, he was actually better than he was in AOTC, and showed that he had tried to improve himself. In fact, his worst acting moments were with Portman, and I can understand his frustration if she was giving him nothing to work with. Hell, his best-acted scene was the one where he was in a completely different building than she was.

She was just plain terrible in ROTS. She looked like she really didn't want to be there until near the end when she got to cry a lot.

That has nothing to do with it. She may have been desperate for money. Or wanted to get her face out and create awareness of her existence as an actress.

To illustrate my point, I suggest you watch the special features on The Last Starfighter SE DVD. Every line Lance Guest speaks is loaded with a galaxy of anguish and the subtle shading of regret, desperation, bitterness and self-loathing. You can tell he hates the film for what it did to him and his career, but he needs the money and it is the only project he's been offered in a while. I would say that he has the most meticulously nuanced and pathos-rich performance of any actor who's ever had to play a failed has-been who must swallow his pride and give a bitter bj for the few meagre dollars it will bring in that I've ever seen, but it wasn't a performance.

The special features alone would be worth the price of the DVD, but unfortunately I can only stomach about 15 minutes of his haunted, lost expression and bloodshot eyes before I have to stop the DVD and wipe away fresh tears.

Since Luc Besson was able to get a terrific performance out of Portman when she was what ... twelve? ... and GL never put anything above average on screen with her, I tend to put the blame on GL. He will never go down in history for his ability to bring out complex female roles on screen.

Alec Guiness wasn't unhappy with being in SW so much as being dominated by it. He did explain how he had spent his entire adult life making movies and made more money for the SW films than he had in the entire rest of his career (and he wasn't exactly unhappy about that). What he seems to have disliked about it was that his career was dominated by the Saga--some people only knew him through those films and ignored everything else that he did for theater and film.

The thing is that a lot of that bad acting is due to the script, and due to Lucas. See, Haydensen actually LIKES Star Wars, he's thrilled to be a part of it. Portman never even saw the goddamn movies until she was approached for the role.

That's saddening. I bet this was covered in alternate casting, but who else would have made a good Padme? What about someone who was already in the movie, like Knightley or Sofia Coppola?

I'm pretty sure that Portman still enjoys being a part of Star Wars, aside from the whole fan harrassment. And I doubt that she'll be known only for it.

Sophia Coppola should be kept behind the lens where she is absolutely amazing (see Lost in Translation), and not infront of it where she is below average (see The Godfather Part III).

That is, of course, if we are talking about the same Coppola here ... also what part did she have in the movie?

Er...no. He didn't appear in AOTC because he had broken his leg.

Also, Alec Guiness supposedly threw away all fan mail he recieved from SW fans without opening them.

Hamill just seems too nice to hate anything. Which is what makes him voicing Joker in cartoons all the more cool. :)

I'd imagine the guys they stick in the Threepio and Artoo suits aren't too thrilled with the franchise. :P

I'm not sure about Kenny Baker, but I would bet Tony Daniels loves them. He appears as Threepio in all sorts of things that are presumably outside of his contractual obligations for the films.

Despite all the fire Hayden Christensen gets for sucking as Anakin in AOTC and ROTS, I've seen him act in other things, and he's pretty good. I think a large part of his lackluster performances in the PT is the script. Let's face it: Lucas sucks as a writer. He may have created a magnificent universe, but if you notice, the OT isn't exactly the pinnacle of dialogue and wit. It plays so well because it's a cool story and has some amazing support from the actors. If you want to see Hayden act, check out Life As A House.

Carrie was also in Austin Powers as the Family counseler.

Hayden wasnt that bad in ROTS. Sure he had some bad parts but that was only because Portman was in the same scenes.

The problem with actors is that some of them are professionals, and some of them ... aren't. It's possible to get a great performance out of a petulant child or a petulant child in a grown-up body, but you have to cajole and baby and nursemaid the child through the process. Or you have to hope that the petulant child has some kind of ego-boost self-aggrandizing motivation to work hard at it, which is why some actors will phone in a performance if they know it won't get them an Academy award nomination. A professional would just do his or her fucking job, and Portman is no professional.

Daniels just did a Jeopardy cameo also, using "the voice" to read a clue. I think he enjoyed it.

From the interviews I've seen with Daniels, he seems to really like the character and actually enjoys doing "in-character" things outside of his contract.

Too bad for him. Fred Gwynne was angry that everyone identified him as Herman Munster instead of acknowledging his stage career. Gil Gerard didn't want to be known as Buck Rogers. Harrison Ford winces when Han Solo is brought up, but will freely talk about Indiana Jones.

I wonder how guys like Christopher Lee, Sir Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart think about their various sci-fi/comic book roles as their legacy to the newest generation. I'm sure Patrick Stewart is used to it. And he was funny as a guest on Conan O'Brien last year, so he has some sense of humor.

I recall seeing one of those weird Disney "One Saturday Morning" cartoons years and years ago (around 1999) called Pepper Ann or something, and Mark Hamill actually had a cameo on it, hawking a comic book by him. A character said that he was Luke Skywalker, and a bunch of mall security carted him away.

Hm. I liked Recess better.

Mark Hamill was also hilarious playing himself playing Luke Skywalker on the Simpsons.
Mark Hamill: You know, I'm here today as Luke Skywalker, but I'm also here ... to talk about Sprint. As you can see, you stand to save up to seventeen cents a month over the more dependable providers.
