It’s annoying that Zahn couldnt find a better way to save the NR other than having Palleon shown as a coward,
It’s especially annoying considering how delightfully competent he is in the later books, especially the NJO.

I wouldnt go that far. Remember, Pellaeon had just undergone a major shock, and he himself wasn't thinking very clearly. (getting choked by a noghri, your commander dying, loosing the cloning facilities and the NR forces shooting up the shipyard all at the same time do that to you).

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? I have two main choices... My first choice would be, of course, Vader, particularilly during ESB. He is ruthless, expeditive, but he's not a maniac, and knows when to give second chances or admit defeat. He also likes to be in the thick of things, and seems to be quite creative in his methods.

My second choice would be.... Desann (Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast). Unlike many other SW villians I've seen, he does not seem to be too full of himself. He has an imposing figure (he IS taller than Vader), and an unorthodox look that makes him a little more exotic than the typical humanoid. Although, what I really like about him is the way he talks. He speaks calmly, smoothly, nearly as a jedi rather than a Sith. He seems to be infinitely patient, specially with his too-eager apprentice Tavion. Also, his goals are logical: Destroy the new Jedi Academy. No search for the ultimate universe-destroying weapon, or for no great power to make him the ultimate master of the force.
He also plays very well along with Kyle Katarn:
Desann - "So this is Kyle Katarn? You look more like a Bantha herder"
Kyle (aiming his blaster at Desann) "And you look like a Koweekyan Mokey Lizard. Now hand over the girl"
Finally, Desann was able to stand his own aganist Luke Skywalker (an scene in wich you get to see how large he really is), and his past is interesting in that he was marginated in his homeworld because of his magic-like abilites, then gets rescued by the Academy, and then, after killing a fellow student in cold blood, scapes before Luke can "counsel" him (a hint at the New Jedi Academy not knowing what to do with darksiders).

(Why do I love to make long posts?)
(Oh and, sorry for the extremely low-canon character, but I really liked him... and since he is probably not well known, the extra exposition surely helps)

Vader-Fuckin awesome. Thats all there is to it.
Palpatine- The sheer scope of his plans and manipulations boggles the imagination. He managed to manipule trillions of people, ten thousand Jedi, hundreds of thousands of planets, and the Chosen One into doing exactly what he wanted. And he uses every setback to make his overall plan even better and more effective. He also beat three jedi swordmasters in under five seconds. And he zapped Yoda. I loved watching Yoda squirm! Stupid tree frog.

What irritates me is the Thrawn fanwhores who consider Thrawn to be undefeatable (I'm not talking about you, since you don't actually like Thrawn, I'm talking about the people who think Thrawn was the Best Grand Admiral Ever... which completely ignores the books). He isn't unfallible, he isn't undefeatable. He loses in the end. Quite shockingly, indeed, and due to strategic oversights. To Thrawn's credit, on the eve of battle he recognised Mount Tantiss' strategic vulnerability, and he was ready to disperse the Spaati cylinders to multiple locations as a means in which to prevent a catastrophe... too little, too late unfortunately.

Personally I like Thrawn because of his flaws, not despite them. I don't think he's this guy who will always win a fight. I think he's a guy who thinks he will always win a fight, and there's a subtle difference. Namely, Thrawn's weakness is his own overconfidence.
Actually Thraw suffers plenty of setbacks doing the story and comes of as far from infallible..putting all the failed attempts to capture luke and leia aside,he also suffer minor setbacks in engagements (due to the heroics of Lando, han and so on).
To me Thrawn just comes of as a caperble commander nothing more..which is why he's so interresting since he's no force-user or sith lord.
