NATO expansion- why?

Pretty self-explanatory. Why does this alliance still exist with the Cold War over? What is its purpose? Who are they defending themselves against? And why does it expand up to Russia's borders, but doesn't ask Russia to join?

Its all the rage to belong to supranational organisations, you know. NATO is in. Warsaw Pact is out and OPEC is just looking dreary this winter.

Besides since the only other option is joining the american empire under Azeron's rule I think that they really have no choice....

As I said, fashion. They are the little frilly bits on the edge.

At least the Estonians I know of are in favor of NATO membership for one geographical reason: they share a common border with Russia. Living 50 years under the communist rule and losing their independence two times during the same century create bad memories, methinks. Now that Estonians are in the NATO, perhaps there's some hope that some Finns pull their heads out from their arse and realize NATO isn't a group of warmongering nations bent on destroying everything in the world.

Well NATO is a military alliance that doesn't answer to the UN at all- the UN has no military teeth whatsoever.
