On the other hand, the scientific method has given us vaccinations for diseases like polio, smallpox, chicken pox, hepatitis, and measles. It has provided us with critical medical procedures like organ transplants, blood transfusion, and coronary bypass surgery. It has provided us with medications for conditions ranging from acid reflux to social anxiety disorder. Science has given us sanitation and public health, which has more than doubled the lifespan of people living in the first world in the last couple hundred years.Darth RyanKCR wrote:You do know that religion founded the most hospitals? And quarentinning based on OT laws help stop the Black Plague?
On the other hand, there are still fundies out there who say that germs don't exist, and people get sick because they are sinners.

On another note, although the subject says "Silliest" Fundie quotes, a lot of the quotes mentioned in various links have shown the kind of hateful thoughts so many fundies have.
So, I add to the list the story mentioned in N&P (http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?t=71200) where some fundie group thinks it would be a good idea to use a labelling system on homosexuals that echoes the system Nazi Germany used to identify their prisoners in concentration camps.[/url]

I want to amend this slightly. I am posting this before reading posts after it.
Science can answer the what of the world and not the why. Religion tries to answer the why and Galileo was trying to say that Science can answer everything.

Heh. You know that Karl Marx first popularized that analogy, right? Not that I'm trying to argue against your argument based on this fact (as it would be illogical to do so), but he didn't mean it as a compliment.Nephtys wrote:To be fair, Religion does have a purpose. Perhaps not, but it is true. In many people, there is an inate spirituality that needs to be satisified by religion of some sort. Completely disregarding it is inviting social unrest. The important thing is to clearly define religion as just that, a release or sorts, or a device to make oneself feel better. Heck, if sufficently modernized, religion can even create a decent moral compass. However, when religion mixes with politics and interferes with scientific and social growth, then you have problems.Heh. You know that Karl Marx first popularized that analogy, right? Religion does actually have one useful aspect - it presents a unified morality. Much in the way Feng shui i suppossed to end up arranging in a manner astetrically pleasing to the majority of people, the unified morality provided by religion provides a base set of morals that most people can agree to. We've seen from former posters here (eg Pat Kelly) that on their own devices people can justify anything to themself. Religion should be applied in some sort of social contract/ philosophical way to provide society with a standard of ethics. The problem is instead it is used as a way of social control, almost completely negating the good aspect because the controlling method lets those in power twist the group morality to justify what would otherwise have been unjustifiable actions.Nephtys wrote:To be fair, Religion does have a purpose. Religion has historically slowed progress greatly, yes. It holds zero answers about the world around us, yes. It does however, provide psychological support for those who really need it. Good for them.
I'm not sure how clear that was...

You're assuming that there is a "why".Darth RyanKCR wrote:Science can answer the what of the world and not the why.
And for the umpteenth time, how does this address the fact that the Church demanded he recant his theory? This is utter bullshit. You're just trying to distract attention from the fact that science has succeeded where religion failed. Religion originally sought to explain where the plants came from, what made the wind blow, what caused disease, etc. It failed. Science succeeded. Nothing you say can change that.Religion tries to answer the why and Galileo was trying to say that Science can answer everything.

More than anything, it underined the Church's authority. The RCC maintained that the sun and other planets revolved around the Earth, and now all of a sudden this Galileo guy came and said that the Sun was the center of the solar system. Hell, the Church knew he was right - Galileo made his discovery while coming up with a new calendar system for the Church. But they couldn't have him proving them wrong, since if they were shown to be wrong in one area, people might start to question their authority in other subjects as well.Darth RyanKCR wrote:That may be incorrect. Organized Religion has always been a mechanism for control. Marx did say that opiate for the masses bit, yes. And it's true. It pacifies a population, and keeps them in line and ignorantly happy. The big deal about Galileo was that he was willing to go.... "Uh.. you guys say this. But it's pretty damn clear that's wrong. Take a look for yourselves. Hey, get your thumbs out of your ears!"

It also bears noting that Christianity encourages the entire neighbourhood to get together and spend an hour or more in a single room, once a week. Not the best way to contain disease outbreaks.NPComplete wrote:To say nothing of the fact that the church forbade doctors to perform autopsies on the grounds that the body was sacrosanct.Melchior wrote:They also organized processions to ask God to make the plangue vanish, thus spreading it.Darth RyanKCR wrote: You do know that religion founded the most hospitals? This one makes me cry on the insideOk..Here's a fact for you. And this is NOT an opinion: If there was a big bang, all of the planets would have to be spinning in the same direction. right? Well, what about Uranus which is spinning in an oposite direction of all the other planets in the Solar System. And what about Triton(one of Neptune's moons)which orbits Neptune in a clockwise direction which is the opposite direction of every other moon in the solar system. I would add that those are more evidences of God's handywork, but you would shoot it down as an "opinion".

Just a little thing about Galileo, the Pope asked him to recant his theory, not the church. The church found him innocent of all charges exept minor boarderline Heresy for insulting the pope, and only demanded a private letter of apology until the pope overturned the ruling. In fact, the Cardinals told Galileo that if he simply didn't show up for his trial and came up with an excuse he would probably get away scottfree after the Pope had time to cool his head. The problem was that Galileo thought that because the Church agreed with him he could get away with just about anything, including all but directly insulting the Pope and his top advisors. The Churches clamp down on science began slightly after the Galileo afair and had more to do with Pascal(or maybe Boyle, one of the pressure dudes) publicly embarassing the Church Scientists.
Galileo just chose a bad time to be the combination of Genius and Jerk. He basically got aquited and then kicked the judge on the way out of court, not exactly the smartest play. Had he lived in Newtons time, he would have been fine, he could have just become a protestant and said fuck you to the Pope without worries.
Hell, Galileos chief supporter was the Popes nephew, he had a damn strong case until he screwed it up himself.

I've never really encountered a fundie but I know I get annoyed talking to the only Christians I know.
If I sit down next to my girlfriend at school and comment that I'm feeling lost because I'm down or ideas aren't coming to me, she'll say 'Open your heart and let God in.' 'No one can make anyone else on Earth happy. Only God can.'
She took me to meet some friends of hers when I was feeling so lost and down that I unplugged everything in my room (lights, computer, TV, alarm clock, etc.). One of them said, 'People aren't allowed to write anything unless it praises God. It's illegal.'
THe only thing that's keeping anywhere near that is the fact that I love my girlfriend.

Hate to break it to you, but that's the textbook definition of a fundie. Almost all of them feel the only thing that can make other people happy is God, or that anything that goes against God is wrong if not downright evil, etc.JediMaster415 wrote:I've never really encountered a fundie but I know I get annoyed talking to the only Christians I know.
