Sticking Star Wars fighters into a Sovereign

Post by Ford Prefect »

Yes, this is a very strange question, I know. How many fighters of A-Wing size and design could you fit into a Sovereign, comfortably?

There's a picture of the upper shuttlebay at STguardian; the shuttle leaving is a Type 11 (specs from DITL : Length : 14.64 m, Beam : 3.26 m, Height : 4.5 m).

The second shuttlebay was never shown in detail, I believe.

Not many, even the largest Trek ships are still slim and slender, not a lot of bulked space for fighters. Question is, why would you want to do this?

From that pic, you can see a bulkhead some ~20meters in. Unless it 'u's' out at the port and starboard sides where we can't see it in that pic, you can only fit about 3 or so A-wings. By the markings on the floor, looks like only two shuttles are suppost to be there.

Imperial tech is pretty modular and easy to plug-n-play(See: Uglies), so presumably any occupying force would want to make use of the few thousand local hullforms for simple patrol forces. Rip the reactor out, plop in a new one, do the same with the shield grid, give it protorps instead of photons. Whee! You have a patrol vessel.

The shuttlebay hangars could also, conceivably, support TIEs or A-Wings.

Both the Constitution and Galaxy class stored most of the shuttles below the actual shuttlebay, so those markings may be elevators.

Here's the MSD of the (pre-refit ?) Sovereign - you can see the shuttle garage one deck below the actual bay.

Nitram is right, it is a refit into an effective patrol craft, performed by a desperate group of Sith who have forcefully allied themselves with the Feds. I use a wing because the fighter they're using is similiar in size and proportion to an a wing.

Would it be more feasible to refit federation fighters with Imperial tech. Also as I have never read the ICS do the X-wings and such have hypermatter powerplant.

I think the Feddie craft would need to have a couple of turbolasers to be able to be effective patrol craft. And A-wings have hyperdrives, why not use something like TIE Interceptors?

Mainly because it isn't Imperials storing their fighters in the Sovereign (it's a bunch of Sith), but really why all these freaking questions? I want to know how many bloody A WINGS (or a fighter of comparable size and shape) will fit inside the shuttle bay. My reasoning is unimportant, I don't want nor need suggestions. Someone needs to know, and they can't on the board.

Hate to get shirty and all, but can we simply speculate on how many fighters of A Wing size and shape would fit comfortably into a Sovy?

Guestimating from the MSD, I'd say three in the upper shuttlebay, six in the hangar below it, and two in the lower bay. That's five A-wings that can be deployed immediately, plus another six that need to be brought up by elevator before launch.

It *might* also be possible to store another dozen or so in the various cargo bays and beam them out, but it's hardly a practical system.

So a squadron eh? How's that for luck, the guy who's writing this story (and can't get on the board) has managed to get it right. Cheers Bounty, and everyone.

They could probably fit a couple more in if they removed the aft phasers and torp launchers.

Another option would be to use the Akira class. The backgound info for the ship states that the (fairly large) front and aft shuttlebays are connected, allowing the ship to be used as a fighter carrier. It'd be a more logical choice for conversion then a Sovereign, and since there is very little info on the Akira, he would have a bit more creative freedom writing about it.

Right, now he wants to know how many you could fit into an Akira. Any ideas?

DITL speculates tat it carries 36 "attack fighters" (I think he means Peregrines - 14 x 13.6 x 4.53m) plus a nimber of auxiliary craft.

Say, 60-ish A-wings, if you park them close together and keep a few in storage below the shuttlebays.

If the Akira had dedicated hanger space inside, it could carry an insane number of fighters. 60 A-Wings could easily fit inside that space.

But that would put these (expensive) fighters in an already underpowered vessel, with little effective shielding or armor.

I'd say a Vic class Star Destroyer or even a Dreadnaught would be a much better chioce, if any Imperial vessels at all were avaliable. OTOH, were they not, this would be an effective carrier, though it should by no means be part of the Feddie standard 'moving wall' attack pattern. Carriers are too valuable.

Obviously, Imperial ships aren't available :

I would use Nebula class starships with pods scratchbuilt as fighter hangars.

Isn't the Akira a smaller ship than the soveriegn with very little room for anything besides a bridge, weapons, and engines?

Smaller, but purpose built. So it doesn't have science and exploration assets.

But if you put that carrying space into it, it wouldn't have room for weapons, a warp drive, or a medical bay. It would have a bridge, impulse engines, and space to carry a handful of fighters (60 is a ridiculous number). And almost no room for fuel. It becomes essentially useless as anything other than a 3rd rate carrier. It would do much better in its assigned role, an attack craft.
