Re-formatting + Partion

Post by Faqa »

After a year of putting it off, I have FINALLY decided to reformat my drive.

Since the primary cause for needing this is a variety of massive-slowdown fuckups in the OS from random acts of senseless downloading, I've decided to partion it, seperating my files and the OS. According to MS help, the option to partion comes automatically with the Windows reinstall. So:

1- Stuff I should know before undertaking this(I've got most of my drivers on disk).

2 - How much space for each partion? Is this even an advisable move(I've heard it is, but I'd like to get another opinion).

3 - Should I format seperately from re-installing Windows? Is the formating done any different?

OS - WinXP Home

Any advice appreciated!

Do not make a seperate partion for the swap file.

Windows. Does. Not. Work. That. Way.

Otherwise, you want at least 8gb for the OS partion. A bare bones install of Windows XP Pro(fully patched + AV) which I have in a virtual machine comes to 2.7gb, but you need growth room if you actually plan on using it. Heck, the Windows directory is 1.6gb alone.

The real question is how much harddisk space do you have?
