Is Jack Chick racist?

I was going through Chick's website when I have discovered the foreign language section. I have also found out that rather than simply translating the tracts, he often changes the artwork as well to match the race of the people being preached to. Becuase, as you all know, you can only accept salvation from a person of the same skin color.

Here's the evidence. Take the famed This was your Life tract. Now, look at the same tract, but in
Arabic,
Chinese
Hindi
English-speaking Africans (compare the text to the American version of the tract. It is exactly the same).

Also, several tracts are not available in English. One called, "How to Get Rich", for example can be seen in numerous languages, but not English. Not surprising, given that it essentiall states "I klnow you're all greedy bastards but the only way to get rich is through Jesus."

The Chinese one looked awesome. The art was precisely 5000x better than the other pieces of shit. So much better in fact, that I find it hard to believe they were drawn by the same shithead.

It's in the list of English tracts. I think all the non-English ones are listed seperately from the English ones.

I do think that Chick is racist, but the best evidence for that is the substance of his tracts, not the artwork or the language distribution (in fact, I'd be a bit surprised if any of them were actually foreign language only, given Chick's demonizing of so many English speaking groups as well (Mormons, Catholics, RPGamers, Jehovah's Witness, people who read books that aren't the Bible, everyone except him, etc)

No I haven't read very much of his stuff, considering the content of it. I was basing it off of this one tract, which seems to be the only one up for consideration, and that because he changed the ethnicity of the people in the tract. He may very well be a raciest, but I can't draw that conclusion based on this one tract.

That makes sense, he seems to warp the faces of the people in his tracts to show a rather demonic or angelic aura, depending on the situation. If he was realistic he would show that most people's outward appearance doesn't reflect their intentions or attitudes. It seems that alot of people get hurt because they are only taught to avoid people that "look bad." How many times do we hear people say, after being taken advantage of, "Well he (or she) looked like a good person."

Jack Chick may well be racist, but changing the ethnicity of characters to match the target audience is a pretty standard marketing practice and doesn't prove anything. People are more receptive to a message when it comes from people who look like them. Sad, but human nature. If Chick is racist for putting Chinese characters in a Chinese language tract, then Coke is racist for doing the same in its ads in China.

Funniest thing I ever read in my life was a parody of Jack Chick's Dark Dungeons by White Wolf Game Studios called Demonic Deviltry. At GenCon '02, to promote their last World of Darkness game - Demon: The Fallen, they had people dressed as disciples of the (fake) Dr Robert Ramos passing out the 'tracts' to gamers, with the obvious reactions. Great publicity stunt for a great game in my opinion.

For it what it's worth Chick married an Asian woman and much of the better artwork in the tracks is done by an African American. I highly doubt Chick engages in anything other than market audience targetting.

Heh. Hadn't thought of it that way. However, Father Ramos wasn't a pseudonym for Lucifer in The World of Darkness canon, but its possible he was a member of The Fallen in-game. Im not sure. Lucifer himself was a character in the 4 canon novels.

The artist who drew that tract has a noted style that says subtle 'EVIL' for most of the characters. His artwork appeared in Demon: The Fallen, Vampire: The Masquerade (Revised Edition), Mage: The Ascension (Revised Edition) as well as Hunter: The Reckoning IIRC.

Well, Chick may be a racist or not. The tracts themselves dont directly indicate anything other than targeting a specific audience, which isnt racist per se. I do however get a definite vibe of like 'White People Heavem is over there, Nigger Heaven is over there. We dont cross the streams!' from some of the other tracts not mentioned here though.

Whther or not Chick is racist is sort of open to interpretation. On the one hand he's definately no KKK style white supremecist, on the other he definately has some very stereotypical viewsabout none white cultures.

BAsically, I don't think he's intentionally racist as much as he's obviously a bit of a hick who's probably never left the States.
