In a default WinXP install the program would be located at
C:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Correct. Except my copy of WinXP apparently had it deleted, which basically means I can't control the sound volume of anything except Winamp!

EDIT: and no, I don't have a WinXP disk or I wouldn't be screaming about it on here :P

Control Panel -> Sounds & Multimedia

There should be a checkbox for "Show volume control on the taskbar". Is this checked?

It unchecks itself, then when I hit the 'advanced' button next to it, it says 'the sound volume control program isn't installed please use add/remove to install it' despite the BLATANT fact the file's on the hard drive!

Sounds to me like my Registry is forked...

Destructionator XIII wrote:Might as well try replaceing the file in system32. It might work. I am currently running XP in an emulator trying to recreate the problem so I can see what is going on better.

I should have some kind of answer for you soon.
The file runs just fine, it's just that whatever Registry doohickey that associates the sound volume control to that program is fucked.
