When I watched the movie I assumed that he gave the order once and it was just transmitted to every single clonetrooper, with the lapses between Jedi deaths due to the varying amounts of time it took his transmission to reach them. Not that it's impossible for him to have made some automated transmission to play in the event of his death, though. Palpy strikes me as the type to do that as well.Durandal wrote:It's a pretty good bet. I'd venture to guess that the holograph viewed by the troops was a recording of Sidious giving the order. After all, does anyone really think he just sat around all day telling every clone unit across the galaxy to start killing Jedi? That'd take way too much time, and the the order appeared to have been delivered nearly simultaneously to each unit, with the Kashyyyk garrison getting it last.Darth Wong wrote:Palpatine doesn't strike me as the kind of person not to have some kind of contingency plan to fuck up the Jedi if he went down. Suppose Anakin decided to tip the other way. He lets Windu kills Palpatine. Order 66 was obviously a standing order, ready to be triggered at any time, and I think it would have been automatically triggered in the event of Palpatine's death.
What would happen in this scenario?
If that's true, then it would've been trivial for him to set up an automated transmission that would send itself out in the event of his death.
Would Order 66 have auto-triggered if Palpatine was killed?

He had a special message for Commander Cody, but he also had a special grudge against Obi-Wan. If you read the novelization, he's really quite keen on killing Obi-Wan and has been for some time. Not only is Obi-Wan a stabilizing influence on Anakin (which gets in the way of Palpatine's plans for converting him), but he also killed one of his earlier apprentices. Palpatine had not planned for Maul's premature death (he assumed that Maul would easily defeat Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan), so this disrupted his plans temporarily.

I see the Clone Wars growing to an even greater pitch. Palpatine probably has it set up to enact Order 66 in the event of his death. But its better for the Jedi that way, since there is no one to lead the charge into the Jedi Temple and defeat the more powerful Jedi there. Even if it is enact right a way, Obi-Wan, Windu, Yoda and Anakin plus the council members that weren't at the confrontation alive. Alderan, Naboo, and the 2000 planets that Padme got to sign against Palpatine break off from the Republic with the Jedi and probably join up with the Sepratists. No telling if the addition of the 2000 systems to the CIS plus the Jedi as generals could turn the tides of the war.

Who would lead the CIS? The Council seems to be quite ineffectual and unexperienced (Count Dooku was the political head, Grevious was the military commander in chief, and Sidious orchestrated the whole thing from behind the scenes; the Council essentially existed to give the major corporations and worlds of the Seperatist movement the illusion of control.) Without a strong leadership, I can imagine the CIS breaking apart and perhaps even surrendering eventually. They might except the new "2000" worlds, but I doubt the'd be to open to the Jedi.

It was obvious to me on first viewing that the message to Cody was the first message and the last part of it was re-transmitted simultaneously to everyone else. All the other Clonetroopers just saw/heard "execute Order 66".

Well, in the movie Mas Amedda doesn't show any particular surprise when Palpatine zaps Yoda, suggesting he knew Palpatine was a Force-user. The Visual Dictionary goes further and states something to the effect that Amedda, Sly Moore, and some of Palpatine's other aides knew of his true nature, or words to that effect. (Don't have the book at hand, so I can't give the exact language.)Darth Garden Gnome wrote:For real? He knew Palpatine was planning to destroy the Republic as the Lord of the Sith? Also, we must not forget that Mas Amedda, Vice-Chancellor of the Senate, would become the de facto CiC in the case of Palpatine's death, and since he is already aware of Palpatine's true nature, I would imagine that he would order the clones to execute Order 66.

Very few of the Jedi were at the JEdi Temple. THere were only a handful of younglings and one swordmaster. And thousands of clones could take them down anyway. Windu and Anakin would probably try to interfere and get shot for there trouble. Yoda might get take out since this time its a recording broadcasting the order. Since there is no significant time lapse between executions, Yoda gets taken by suprise and shot. With clones running amok, the JEdi all but extinct, and Mas Amedda in control of the Senate, the Republic essentially dissolves while the CIS collapses from internal pressures. The Clone Wars dissolve into a millions of conflicts between individual planets, systems, and warlords.

You think that because that's all we saw in the movie, that's all that were in the Temple? The novelization states that there are always hundreds or thousands of Jedi in the Temple at any given time.Trooper TK12746 wrote:Very few of the Jedi were at the JEdi Temple. So given Shaak Ti was there, given the Novel explicitly states they were in lockdown, and given they also showed more then a number of adults...unless these were all younglings.Trooper TK12746 wrote:Where? That is according to the VD. Supposedly most of the JEdi are dead or fighting on other planets. Why would Jedi be hanging around the Temple anyway? THere was a war going on.
As to why they are hanging around the Temple? I keep forgetting this is their base of operations. Why the fuck do we have soldiers hanging around bases when there's a war going on?

The holonet means that you don't have to have a single base of operations. Most of the JEdi are commanding task Forces or have already been killed. We know about two other adults in the temple at the time (besides Shaak Ti), the gatemaster jurokk, and the very old Cin Drallig who was in charge of the younglings and teens.

Where does it say in the VD that Cin Drallig is 'very old' as you put it? Baiol Organna says that he saw "Thousands of troops" in the temple as well as (unbenownst to Bail) Anakin that would indicate that they were facing more than just a handful of younglings and a 'very old' man that happens to be the Order's saber instructor.Trooper TK12746 wrote:Younglings and teens, the teens were younglings and have not been selected to be apprentices, their training has been stopped as a result of the war. That just meant they were doing a thorough job. Palpatine has a tendency for overkill. And even a handful of Jedi would be difficult to deal with if you are in a larger building like the Jedi Temple. Anakin was probably there to deal with surivors and make sure that no Jedi were able to hide from the attack.
In the temple montage we clearly see adolscent and older Jedi being surrounded and gunned down by troops. Same with the young man that Bail sees killed. A half dozen troops take him down. No Anakin. And if the EU is to believed in that aspect that young man was considered one of the most talented padawans since Anakin and he was gunned down in short order.Trooper TK12746 wrote:That just meant they were doing a thorough job. And even full fledged Jedi Knights and Masters were killed by a handful of troops in the Order 66 Montage.
There is no evidence that a mass body of troops could not overcome Jedi easily. In the Arena on Geonosis 200 Jedi, including some of the best and brightest of the Order are slaughtered by several hundred to a thousand battle droids.

A thousand battle droids per Jedi supposedly attacking from all sides. ANd the kid that got taken down, he was around 10 or 11 years old, I am not at my house, so I can't give you the exact number from VD. And he took down a bunch of troopers first. And in the novelization, the temple's swordmaster (drallig) is taken down by a lightsaber, not a blaster.
And even if the kid was talented, he might not have had time to be trained completely. He would not have mastered the art of deflecting blasters

I guess the Jedi masters that died on Geonosis had not mastered the art of blaster deflection either.Trooper TK12746 wrote:A thousand battle droids per Jedi supposedly attacking from all sides. It doesn't matter how good you are at it, eventually your defenses will be saturated. We see this clearly in the novelization when Obi Wan fights Greavous. Greavous starts hitting obi Wan's defense with more than 20 saber strikes per second and Obi Wan must switch to the offensive before his defenses become overwhelmed and this from the MASTER(per Mace) of Soresu the defensive art of lightsaber combat.
And I would assume that the saber instructor of the Order would require Anakin to bring him down. That's why he went. There's no reason however to think that even without Anakin the temple would have been overwhlemed by sheer numbers. Geonosis proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Palpatine had a contingency plan for his death, the clones at BYss. He had a contigency plan for the destrution of those, a secret stash of clones. He had a contigency plan for a revolt by hte Imperial navy, he had a contigency plan for a revolt by Coruscant. Palpatine is always prepared.
And wasn't that my initial point? THat thousands of clones could have cleared the temple without Anakin? Or even with Anakin opposing them?

Hang on a sec, before Palpitine apparently destroyed the recording device, now assuming the actual database was intact, it wasn't exactly in his favour.
It has the Jedi arriving and simply telling him he is under arrest, by the authority of the senate. Then Palpitine snarls "I AM THE SENATE!"...THAT line is not something senators, even those who may have supported him, are going just let slide.
I think there is a good chance that without Palpitine, the shroud being then suddenly lifted, that many Jedi will survive the Order 66 attacks and go to ground for long enough for this evidence (and in fact the Order 66 "Judge Jurry Executioner" itself) to be presented as evidence.
Then with people like the group of 1000, enough support can be gained in the senate under these conditions to get someone rational elected to replace Palpy and calm everything the hell down.
Oh and if Mace and Anikin move quickly, they CAN get back to the temple well ahead of the clones and get everyone evacuated. While I think its clear the shear number of clonetroopers overcame the Jedi, it was also a factor of being completly unprepared and unexpecting and being led by a Jedi who could tie up the most skilled of the swordsmen, plus one who knew where the threats all lay and where to go and so on.
With Anikin and Mace getting back ahead of time, they can probably get everyone evacuating fast and going to ground until everything gets calmed down. Not to mention with the shroud now lifted, their abilities will be just that much greater....

Well the destroying the recording thing is in the novelization, and the novelization account of his arrest is far different to the one in the film. In the novelization, there's a bit of an extended conversation, Palpatine tries some banter, etc. It all depends on how you attempt to fit the novelization in. My approach would be that the novelization's account of the recording device etc didn't happen that way, but at some point Palpatine recorded some evidence.Chris OFarrell wrote:Hang on a sec, before Palpitine apparently destroyed the recording device, now assuming the actual database was intact, it wasn't exactly in his favour.
