Bah! Enough of Jedi! Any other elite martial orders/arts?

Post by Battlehymn Republic »

Wanting to be a Jedi, and wanting to use a lightsaber and all that was a cool thing when you were a kid, but nowadays with the EU and RPG and KOTOR and Galaxies and all that, it just seems rather bourgeois.

So are there any other cool martial arts/orders/disciplines/styles/weapons that are... notable? Any of them learnable by the layman? What's your favorite?

I like Senate Guards' weapons.
Senate Guards are not as well trained as Imperial Guards, and are taught one form of martial art known as Hijkata, given extensive blaster training, and taught to use a blaster pike, which is basically a purple lightsaber on a staff.
I wonder how hard it is to learn the Hijkata in the RPG. I like Imperial Guards even more, but it would really suck to be one. I've read Crimson Empire.

Well, there is Teras Kasi (sp?) but I don't know much about it, save for the fact that it's an uber-elite hand to hand fighting style. Laymen can use it, and it's popular among assassins and the like. There was a particularly awful PS1 fighting game based on it. I think it was first mentioned in SotE.

Martial Arts:

Teras Kasi - From the Masters of Teras Kasi video game, and referred to in an NJO book.

Echani - Royal Guards hand to hand training on Yinchorr.

K'thri - A showman's martial arts which centers on flashy moves.

Stava - Noghri-style wrestling, spread throughout the galaxy after the Thrawn Trilogy

Ktara - Maximum damage, low noise. Usually taught to Special Forces.

Referred from Hero's Guide, WOTC.

Teras kasi (steel hnds) & Echani (Martial arts pre-cog) as has been said.
Imperial guard style is a near match for jedi.

The Mandalorians had very good fightning disciplines that integrated well with sword fighting or ranged combat disciplone, plus they were easily ccesible if you had a decent Mandalorian as a teacher.

I wonder if there's a name for the crazy wacky antics that Jar Jar uses to get himself out of (and into) scrapes. You know.. Binks Fu or something. ;) It probably requires incredible dumb luck to pull of effectively, though!

Why would it suck to be a Red Guard?
Read Crimson Empire II and the short stories regarding Kanos, it makes him look like a true badass, as well as fanatically loyal to the Emperor.

Probably akin to Jackie Chan's immortal style of drunken boxing.

The training is nasty, one of the last tests is to kill your best friend.

If you want something better the Imperial sovereign protectors are red guard with force powers and training from Vader.

They still go through regular training though. And most of them probably know better than to get too attached to their training partner. SOunds good to me, I would just want to be one of the four guars assigned to always protect the emperor.

Ever heard of "punching bag" or "bullet fodder"

Why exactly shouldnt they get attached to the one person in the world who is their friend?

Besides, they get almost no action on film, except when Yoda tosses them like bitches.

And they get hunted down. You see, elite is cool, except for the obligations and dangers. I'd much rather be Zuckuss instead of Boba Fett.

They get killed by being ambushed by vast numbers of stormtroopers in confined quarters, saying theyre bitches because they get taken down by a traitor and a general order 122 is like saying the jedis were pussies for getting slaughtered by Vader.

I'm not saying they were bitches for getting killed, just when Yoda Force-pushes them, resulting in my whole theatre laughing. However, I wouldn't want to be an Imperial Guard, since they're such obvious targets, any more than I want to be a Jedi. Sure, skills compensate, but it's hard to deal with a galaxy of hatred against your kind.

Considering Yoda later starts flinging around senate podiums like toys doesnt mean that they arent bad-ass.
(And yeah, I cheered when Yoda pulverised them:D ).

Also is there any truth to the rumors that we will see them slaughter the senate guard in the ROTS dvd? ("crosses fingers").

The guard was trained in advanced infiltration techniques, Kanos got along very well despite having a titanic bounty on his head and being hunted by a former guard elite and later the imperial remnant.

I've been calling for that, for Lucas to fulfill his political hints with a climatic "Red vs. Blue" battle. But someone told me that most of the Senate Guards joined the Imperial Guards, since Palpatine controlled the Senate. Still, I'd expect some to be protective of the dissenting, sympathetic Senators that never showed up in the film.

Kanos smashed anybody who fought him, huunted down the traiterous ruling council of the Empire, stopped a clone conspiracy, and evaded capture despite the best efforts of every major power in tthe galaxy.

Being beaten by Yoda doesn't make you a bad fighter. Only one person has ever beaten Yoda (that we know of) and that was Palpatine, the guy they are supposed to protect. They can take on any threat (other than uber-Jedi).
