Delta Flyer vs. Tie Fighter Squadron
Let's say Tom Paris, Harry Kim, Belonna, and some unknown ensign take the Delta Flyer for a spin.
Somehow, they end up in Imperial territory(due to Q(Q's son, the one that becam friends with Icheb) when he wanted to see a battle.)
THe Imps send a squad of good old Tie Fighters at the Delta Flyer and are ordered to fire because they are trespassing.
Delta Flyer shoots back.
WHo wins?
How many ties are in a squadron anyway?

Without the Ties having missiles or torpedoes this becomes quite interesting. The Delta Flyer has 8 phaser arrays and has full coverage at every angle.

A single Tie would be slaughted by the DF.paladin wrote:I think it's 12 TIE fighters to a squadron. Anyway, a single TIE would be more then a match for the Delta Flyer.

Couple salvos from any TIE and the Flyer is quite dead. The TIE's take no losses and their jammers fry the Flyers systems.

Sea Skimmer, you seem to have a deep prejudice either for the TIEs or against the Delta Flyer, I doubt just one salve from the 12 fighters would make it explode, ater all, TIEs aren't THAT strong.
Or maybe I am completely wrong about my favorite ship, and i just don't want to face it being blasted to atoms.
btw, what is this poke thngy? it doesn't make any sense.

The poking is a crappy tradition begun at SB.com. Moderators have no position on this particular matter.FaxModem1 wrote:Sea Skimmer, you seem to have a deep prejudice either for the TIEs or against the Delta Flyer, I doubt just one salve from the 12 fighters would make it explode, ater all, TIEs aren't THAT strong.

I don't think that a salvo from TIE fighters could destroy the Delta Flier, but a twelve to one advantage is simply far too great for the Delta Flier to overcome. If the TIE's had missiles, it would be no contest, but as it is I think it might be reasonable to assume that the Delta Flier has a slim chance of doing considerable harm to the TIE fighters, though its ability to track and target multiple fast-moving and maneuvering adversaries is highly suspect.

We know you were talking about the "really crappy ones" from the movie, but we're saying that even the most ordinarily crumby SW technology is good enough to take on some of the best ST technology, given the massive numbers advantage your original scenario gave them.FaxModem1 wrote:Their Tie Fighters, not advanced Tie fighters, the really crappy ones that kept on being blown up in the movies.
Not Defenders, not bombers, NOT advanced, just Tie Fighters.
Well, I guess it is kind of unfair, one fighter vs. TWELVE.
Let's say three, can they even face just three fighters?
Possibly. One of the things you must remember in this case, is the disimilarity of class. The Delta Flier would be, in SW, a gunship, and probably a medium one. It SHOULD be able to destroy a large number of fighters. Further, the Delta Flier appears to have withstood weapons fire that posed a threat to Voyager in the past, though its shields are considerably weaker than those of its mothership. Given that, I would give it a good chance of destroying three TIE fighters. I think that its largest limitation is clearly its ability to engage and track and target multiple fighters, but I think its shields would give it relatively even odds against the TIE's, if the TIE's were piloted reasonably well.

YAY, finally, a positive note for my side.
I know, I seem to be a little one-sided on this, but its my favorite ship and I guess I'm obsessed with it, like how some people are obsessed with the -Wing or the Millenium Falcon or the Defiant.
Or the Star Destroyer(anyone notice this site's name?)
(sounds of door being banged down)Uh oh, their coming to get e for that last remark. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Just out of curiosity, what are you referring to with that statement about ISD's? I don't think that many people deliberately try to increase its combat abilities very much (though that is undoubtedly in part because they do not have to). I also continue to find it interesting that people deliberately try to increase the firepowers of their favorite ships just because they are their favorites. Some of my favorite ship designs are the X-Wing, the Vorlon cruiser, the starfury, and the Shadow Battle Crab. I know damn well that none of these ships could engage most SW frigates with even a chance of victory; I know that their designs are not successful from an engineering standpoint, but it makes no difference to me. I like the designs, but do not have to believe in their infinite ability to do things that have never been seen in order to like their aesthetics.FaxModem1 wrote:YAY, finally, a positive note for my side.

BTW, you did get support immediately from Alyeska, even if it was only a sort of passing remark.
[editor's note: I know this can be construed as a double post, but when you're already a Jedi Council Member three times over, AND a moderator, you kind of stop caring about the post-count]

What do you mean? How did I rise to be moderator? Or how did my post count get to be so big?FaxModem1 wrote:I was just showing how my love for my favorite ship was interfering with my judgement.
To Alyeska: Sorry if I forgot aout your support, just that it seemed that everyone said the ship was chopped liver.

My post count has always been huge, for the board. I've usually ranked slightly behind Mr. Bean, and I understand that I have been recently passed by Verilon, but other than those two, I have had more posts than almost anyone else for a long time. I've been here almost since the start of the board, and I don't do a lot of work when I'm "working," so I have lots of free time. Then, about a month ago, David asked me if I wanted to be a moderator, and I agreed. The nomination was confirmed by the board, and DW made me a mod. Since then I've been pretty busy, and I haven't been posting nearly as much (I have no real incentive to join in the post-boosting threads, since I have more than enough posts for anything, already), and so my posts/day has been going way down, but I've had a lot of fun on the board, and I don't plan to leave it.

Ossus, IG-88 is also ahead of you but those three are it.
As for the fighters effectiveness, I seriously doubt the Flyer could take a dozen 1 kilotonish shots in to space of under two seconds on one small area of shielding. Something going to get through and that will be it for the Flyer. The attacker might need another pass to destroy it but that would be easily.

There's a hell lot more of them and TIE sims are prolly conditioned to simulate death upon being hit, so anyone who makes it through the TIE training course must be a hellacious pilot.
Not to mention that TIEs are faster than almost anything except an A-Wing.

TIEs are too maneuverable for the Delta Flyer. It doesn't stand a chance, especially against twelve. Against one or two, it'll be a stalemate, but against twelve it's dead.
