June 24, 2005
Each week, members of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club will have the opportunity to leave their mark on the Star Wars expanded universe. Fans can develop an original backstory for characters, creatures, locations, vehicles, and more seen in the Star Wars films. If your backstory is selected, it will become part of Star Wars continuity and be included in the starwars.com databank.
Each week, this page will update with a new entry. Provide a brief yet detailed summary about the entry's history and specifics. Peruse the databank for existing entries to get a feel for the style and depth of the text.
The story that best fits within Star Wars continuity will be selected from the finalists and incorporated into a databank update. The provider of the backstory will be credited in the databank.
Please note that entries may be rewritten to for style and accuracy, and similar entries may be combined. While the entry subjects will change every week, the finished entries will only be posted once enough have been gathered to warrant a full databank update article. Keep checking starwars.com for more details as they become available.
Sounds interesting. I'm unsure of whether or not it's a good idea, though, but I'm certain that we'll defininitely have to re-evaluate our appreciation for EU authors once we see these fan entries published.
I doubt, that even Palo will pick idiotic fan ones, there will always be at least one good one that will be submitted.
I just submitted an enty for the "John Knoll" character.
I wrote:Chair of the Republic Bureau of Immigration and Emigration on Coruscant (BIEC), Tannon Praji has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Capitol remains safe and secure among the horrors of the Clone Wars. The responsibility of his office is to ensure that only those citizens loyal to the Republic gain entry to the Capitol and those who are branded for treason are imprisoned or deported.
Praji himself is a member of the presitgious Praji family, which has long held great influence on Coruscant. Majority shareholders in the Bank of the Core, the Praji family has produced many who have finagled themselves into top government positions.
Tannon, a trillionare in his own right, was appointed to the BIEC early in Palpatine's term as Supreme Chancellor. For years he maintained a steady equilibrium among the immigration and emigration on the Capitol world. As the Seperatist crisis began to come into light, however, Praji closed Coruscant's borders to newcomers, and billions of immigrants were turned away, leading to masses of refugees crowding Coruscant's spaceports.
After the Clone Wars began, Praji, along with countless other government officials, caved into pressure from the newly formed Commision for the Protection of the Republic (COMPOR), to deport members of species who's homeworld's had sided with the Seperatists. Although he was lauded by Palpatine for securing peace an security on Coruscant, Praji was the target of several assasination attempts by terrorist groups, but his resolve was only hardened.
He was a fan of the opera, and would travel to the Galaxies Theatre whenever his work schedual allowed, however, he never traveled without his disguised bodyguards after the attempts on his life.

Well, I can only hope that we won't end up with minor extras elevated to grand galactic significance, as with KJA's "IG-88 was about to take over the universe" story...

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea for SD.net members to pool together ideas for some submissions? Especially technical stuff for entries about vehicles or starships? That would increase the chances for good ideas to make it. We could even (subtly) fight EU minimalism by adding small little details that would improve the size and scale of the SW universe.
This idea seems to have potential, provided it can get past Pablo's influence. I wonder if this could include correcting Executor's length, among other existing discrepancies.
I could at least contribute an entry or two on EU starships, though I'd rather have others review the material before I submitted it.

LucasFilm has been tiptoeing--in a not-so-subtle way--around this kind of issue recently it seems. When they made their new Death Star entry they chose "not to comment" on the size of the Death Star II, lest they piss off TFN fanboys or some of the more technical-minded individuals (ie-us).
And of course, Pablo's disdain for those same individuals in well-documented.

Huh? Both Databank entries give measurements, the incorrect 120km and 160km diameters respectively.
I just submitted an entry. It was incredibly lame, I'll admit. I just felt obligated to partake of this service I'm paying for. Perhaps I'll come her for consultation next time...

Could you post it for us?
Actually, I copied the entry over, but I screwed it up and lost the transfer.
I'll try to transfer it more efficently next time. Essentially, it involved him being a famous holofilm maker from Kaut who studied alien cultures for source material.

I think Pablo decides the weekly entry, so we can't just go in and post whatever we want. I find it unlikely for him to put in anything about a ship as obscure as Giel's flagship.
Why? They put in a lackluster character like Lumiya.

They managed to connect Senator Greyshade with the yellow speeder Anakin stole in AOTC, I wouldn´t put it past them to accept Admiral Giel or his ship, if we could sell it as a cute Marvel SW reference.
I wish the EU writers would drop the notion that every single character needs to have an interesting backstory. Are there no people with boring lives in Star Wars who just find themselves thrust into remarkable circumstances? That was the whole fucking point of the Luke Skywalker story; a kid with a go-nowhere boring life who finds himself thrust into remarkable circumstances. A story about the first 18 years of his life should be totally boring.

They wouldn't. That's the whole problem; they want to make databank entries about minor characters so they feel that they have to invent interesting backstories for them.

God damn, don't they realize that the majority of people in the Star Wars universe are supposed to be normal people? That's what makes it cool.. it's realistic. Now every fucking extra that appears in every scene is supposed to be leading a great, heroic, adventurous life?
Even worse, to fuel this stupid idea they're bringing in "fans"?
Can you imagine an Indiana Jones "fan-written EU" thing where every person who appears in every scene of the movie goes on incredible adventures, retrieving rare artifacts and fighting Nazis?
