Fustrations in Multiplayer Games

Post by Exonerate »

We've all had them before... This thread is just for me to rant in.

So, I just played a game of Natural Selection (Mod for HL). Combat mode, for those who know and play NS. I was on marines and things were going fairly well, except for one minor thing.

My team wasn't aggressive enough. We had a couple good players who knew what to do, but the majority of them were pretty mediocre. What kept happening was I'd take point, fight off several aliens, dance around for a couple seconds trying to avoid getting killed, then finally die. And each time my team was nowhere to be seen. I'm pretty decent - I can run towards the hive room, kill two skulks on the way, take out a fade egg, then kill another skulk and lerk, and dance around a dozen seconds before I am overwhelmed and die. If we had maybe 4, 5 marines in there with me, we'd have won the game. But, noooo - guess where they are? They're camping behind me, outside of the room with their shotguns and hmgs, waiting for some random skulk to xeno them and take out half the group.

WTF? This isn't CS - Marines only win if they destroy the hive, and camping outside the hive room sure as hell isn't going to do that. We don't have limited lives or a long respawn time - if you die, fine, you respawn. Everytime I scream "PUSH YOU GODDAMN NOOBS!" I'm met with a response like "OMG NO WE HAVE TO DEFEND" NO YOU IDIOTS YOU PUSH AND PUSH, YOU DEFEND ALONG THE WAY. IF YOU DIE, YOU HAVE A PLACE TO FALL BACK TO INSTEAD OF GETTING SPAWN CAMPED. If you can't beat the aliens before they get fades and oni, how the hell do you expect to when they do? Its like your average player is totally impervious to logic.

I don't care if you can't aim well or dodge. Screaming "OMG LEARN TO AIM" isn't going to improve anybody's aim, but they could at least make an effort to use some strategy. One onos charges in against 7 marines and what happens? Half of them turn around and start running. SHOOT THE DAMN THING, EVEN IF YOU'RE GOING TO RUN, YOU CAN RUN BACKWARDS AND SHOOT. One fade blinks in, kills a marine, then blinks out, and what happens? People run to the corners. CHASE IT BEFORE IT REGENERATES AND COMES BACK. One skulk keeps ambushing the team from behind? LEARN TO TURN AROUND ONCE IN AWHILE.

Jesus Christ, I swear online games are going to ruin my faith in humanity.

I was playing WoW a few days ago, and I was using a new Tauren Shaman I cooked up to try and kill a unique monster. Anyway, as I made my way towards the den I noticed that two other players were already there. I asked for an invite... no response. Okay, I'll just wait for them to kill it and then go get the next one. So I stood back a ways, and one of them summons the thing just as the other one was charging a group of three or four of its guards, agroing all of them simultaneously. One of them went down almost immediately, the other started running straight for me. "HELP!" He's shouting at me. So, I cast some healing spells to try and save him, put down my totems, and wade into combat, swinging at everything that moves. Meanwhile, one of my area effect totems meanwhile damages the unique guy (which neither of the two clods was smart enough to hit first), and so without even thinking about it I become the proud owner of a unique's hide and therefore a quest item. I managed to take out the unique and four of the enemies pretty much by myself in an EXTREMELY close fight (I got knocked down to about 3% health and 1% mana), and I saved the one guy who then resed his friend. Then they BOTH start cussing me out for killing the unique when they summoned it.

I offered to summon the thing again (since I had the appropriate item) so they could kill it, but they refused and threatened to report me. I'm honestly not too worried, but I was pretty pissed that after calling for my help they would then pull something like that--especially since their poor play was the reason we were in trouble in the first place.

Report you? WTF are they going to say?

Man if there's one thing I hate on WoW, it's idiots who just don't fucking listen when you tell them something.

For example, Uldaman, when fighting Arcaedus (the last boss)-

"Ok, when his health goes down to 30% he'll call the last adds, we need to all attack him and kill him otherwise the adds will kill us. So when that happens, drop what you're doing attack him. Don't worry about the adds, they'll disappear when he dies".

I had done the Uldaman run several times by this stage (I was a lvl 55 warrior back last time, it was my last run)- and what happens? Noone fucking attacks, even when I'm screaming for them to. We all die. I cussed them out so badly.

Or another example? I was in Blackrock Depths on Saturday night (I was lvl 58 on Sat night, I hit lvl 59 last night)- it was my second run through. I don't know the place very well at all as a consequence, but I recognized the areas I had been in and I recognized what would be hard and what would be easy. Part of the thing that attracted me and my priest friend to the group was that the leader, a lvl 57 priest, claimed that he knew BRD inside and out. I had a shitload of quests to get done.

So we end up in this room where you're locked in and attacked by swarms of spiders. The group I was in previously had barely survived it, only me and a 60 paladin guildie living through the encounter. So I told them flat out that no, I wasn't going in there, we would die and this party was too weak for BRD- since I was the only tank, we had one more priest than necessary (my friend, admittedly, but hey, she was a much better damn healer than the party leader was) and that the party members were with the exception of me and my friend, too low lvl.

(note: I hate duraloss and will avoid dying wherever possible)

They keep saying how easy it is blah blah blah, and I go against my better judgement and walk in there. Of course, we all fucking die. Upon that I bailed the instance- we had a good minute or so long discussion about the difficulty of that area and the idiots kept insisting it was easy even after we were all wiped out. Well fuck that.

Bought BF2.

Played it for an hour or so single player, just checking things out and having a bit of a blast.

Jumped online, thought "this is pretty neat eh"

Was killed 29 times by my own team mates.

Was killed 3 times by the enemy.

Look, it might be a new game and all but it's not that friggin hard!!!! This same pattern was repeated on every server I went on. (All Internode btw, which tends to be tard free :!: )

While my TFT disk no longer works, I've taken to playing SC on b.net again to fill the game-void in my left. For SC, only newbs and poor losers remain on b.net.

I can barely count the number of times someone has accused me of being a hacker and then simulataneously calling me a newb. I tell them I've discovered a wonderful technique called "scouting" but they don't believe me, even though any idiot could have plainly seen my units flying over his base doing recon.

Honestly, it's gotten so bad that at times I feel like just not attacking his woefully undefended expansion just so I can forego the risk of him calling me a hacker and then calling down the wrath of the other people in the game down upon me.

Back when I was in college, my roommate and I played CS on the LAN, usually against ROTC students. We won ~70% of the time, but we usually got into shouting matches about his indiscriminate use of flashbangs. The problem was he wouldn't warn me when he was chucking one into an area, and since I was usually point man...

Speaking of this and the above about shooting your own team-mates, I've done this but only ever on one map in Battlefield 1942(FH version) and thats Berlin, Maybe its just the fact the Officer's get Commisar hats but I've found myself yelling into TS or typing in All caps, Advance! Advance or you will be shot! Cowards and Traitors are to be shot on sight!

In multiplayer games. I would just like to nominate Halo 2 as the most frustrating of all time. I've played shit loads of games. I've tagged every genre. I've gone from LAN, to console lovin' split screen to PC internet dial up/broadband joy. With all this in my background, I feel this game is the literal crotch of internet/online/multiplayer gaming. It gives every single fucking chance it can to make your gaming experience as cheap and frustrating as possible. With that said it's fucking addictive. When you get around the game mechanics and figure out how to defeat those damned exploiters and h@x0rZ you can really fuck the program up. BTW, if you ever visted the atrocity that is the bungie.net forums, don't bother trying to untangle the mess, or try to inject logic. You will honestly get this response, when the debate was going on about it taking more skill to use the Battle Rifle (which is long range, scopes, and can kill with well placed headshots in around 3-4 bursts) then to use spray-and-pray SMG, I was told that the point that even one SMG will give you recoil causing you to constantly adjust your aim, or compensate for it, didn't factor into the equation. The point tha it has a slightly larger recticle proves it takes less skill. :wanker:
It can be one of the best games out there easily, but then especially on thier match making system, if you get one of thier gimick type rounds, it's going to fucking suck.

With that said, I'll probably be on in the morning working on rumble pit standings.

I don't get time to play many games online, and when I do it tends to only be CS. I used to use most of their other game servers quite some years ago now, but life and business has me short on time.

Internode CS #4, #5, and #6 are what you'll most often see me on. If I end up buying BF2 again (I bought it as a gift for an employee) then I'll be playing there again.

They're the only servers I've found that have the least "OMG STOP CAMPING, OMG BS HEADSHOT I SO SHOT YOU FIRST" crap, and I'm also an Aussie so I get good ping.

My BF2 frustrations:
  • Inept teammates. If you get in the gunner seat of my chopper, I expect your dumb ass to be able to figure out how to correctly and efficiently use both the cannon and AT missiles. Given that I fly gunships properly (i.e., fucking fly and let the gunner do the killing - saving the 2.75in rockets for situations where they're actually needed), this is very important. If the gunner does not kill AA competently (or even good AT), we'll fucking die. This of course extends to situations beyond just gunships too.
  • Squadmates who don't listen. I often create a squad and run it and I don't mind when individual squad members take some initiative (in fact, I hate sheep almost as much as these asstards who run off) and generally do their own thing, but when they're on the other side of the map and not even making a token effort to spawn on me and complete the objective given out by myself or the commander, I get pretty damned pissed. I was just playing awhile ago and booted a cockgoblin who spawned on me (I was in the .50 of an FAV capping a point with two other squadmates in an LAV) and immediately drove straight off while we were under fire and trying to hold the point that we had just taken not two seconds ago.
  • The F/A-18 Super Hornet. What a flaming piece of shit.
  • Similar to inept teammates, I hate when a team is unable to accomplish certain vital support tasks. "If you want something done right, do it yourself," is sadly very true, but as much as I'd like to be an Army of One, I can't do everything myself. This includes such things as: Getting in the F-15 Strike Eagle and shooting down the motherfucking Su-34 Flanker that keeps bombing us, killing that Super Cobra that's shredding us consistently, knocking out enemy artillery, SHOOTING THE GODDAMN TANK (this one in particular irks me, as I am much more in my element with the Medic class and can't switch to Anti-tank everytime a vehicle shows up), and so on.
  • Dumbasses in general, particularly the kind who always punish TKs. FF motherfucking happens, the only reason the option to punish is there is to deal with fuckwits who do it intentionally. Personally, I always forgive unless it's on purpose (to get to a vehicle first, often) or is incredibly stupid. Like when I have my medical gear out, crouching next to my squad leader, healing him, as he empties a magazine on me, reloads, and finishes me off before realizing his mistake (yes, that happened).

Too many to list for WoW...so only my recent Sunken Temple.

So I'm helping out some level 52-55 in this place, and oh fucking damn...loot comes up and they bitch moan and wail who gets what(They are a Priest, Druid, Mage...with a really dumb warrior, how dumb? My Paladin was EASILY tanking.........and I have an alt Warrior at 59, I know what a warrior can do...use your fucking defensive STANCE!!!)

Nonetheless, the warrior rolls on loot he'll never use, and the other three don't grasp that sitting and arguing for 20 minutes won't solve shit. Amazingly the idiot warrior gets assraped on the nice dragon living there, and good fucking riddance.

So I call on another Pally friend, and we beat Hakkar pretty easily once they listens to me....yeah I only beat the fucking thing more times then I can count on my fingers and toes.

As for BRD...I've two manned all but the bosses with a Rogue, if for nothing else to test how good my tanking skills are, and yes, I use a two hander just to go "Fuck You....I don't need a shield unless I'm in MC dumbfucks"

Let's see, oh yes...newest gem of "Shamans are not GODS!". In Razorfen Downs...we have two warlocks, mage, Rogue, Warrior....Shaman. Can you guess who both tanked an was one healing duty?

Fucking A, what is with idiots picking warriors and not learning the class. I'm not asking for all warriors to be gods, but like I expect a Paladin to Bless me, I expect the warrior to at least get aggro off the FCUKING SQUISHIES.

Holy good god jesus, can I relate to the OP, it's all I fucking complain about in Call of Duty.

Just like the OP, my teammates aren't agressive enough. The worst part is that no one really types fast enough in the heat of combat, no one uses the quick chat that has pre-built in commands and no one wants to listen. And since it isn't a console, there isn't a defaul feature that has a headset (although on top of that headsets aren't even an extra like they are in CounterStrike).

In general my gripes are the same as Exonerate's but in particular ROOM CLEARING. JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUS all it takes is an automatic weapon -- just grab your balls and go in their. Sprint in, scan for targets, spray and pray -- the enemy invariably camping on the inside has a harder time tracking a target since you're moving and he's crouching in a corner. IT'S TOO DAMN EASY! Even more so with grenades! EVEN WORSE, when trying to move from one room to the other EVERY FUCKING TIME I SWEAR all my allies pile up in our room slowly doing CounterStrike bullshit of moving in and out of the doorway trying to pick off the enemy etc etc. EVERY TIME the enemy throws a grenade in our room and fries our team which only makes the noobs more timid.   I simply go in said room, see the pile up, perform an about-face, and go the other way. It isn't worth dying and getting even more frustrated over.

The amazing thing is like I said, I can't physically talk to my allies but that still doesn't help my throat at all. :x

Whenever I play Hurtgen in Call of Duty *everyone* tries to be a sniper. Every single goddamn person. It is fucking insane. You cannot even walk across the valley without getting shot by six different people. Of course, invariably the enemy will sneak one guy across and he'll mow down all of my dumbfuck teammates who are sitting on the hill trying to pick off the Germans who are of course wearing white uniforms in the SNOW.

"Come on two guys with me let's go"
"No no we have to snipe"
"No let's go"
"No faggot we have to snipe"
"Fuck you asshole I'm going over"
*proceed to take out 4 snipers before dying*
"OMG LOL you died see I told you we needed to snipe"
"Oh, sorry, did *I* drop that grenade? My bad."

I must admit, I hardly ever use defensive stance when I play, and we do just fine for the most part (I'm Arms/Fury polearm, protection can go take a hike). I switch to Defensive and taunt when things are dire, but it hardly ever comes up to be honest. Usually challenging shout and mocking blow in battle stance are sufficient. Then again, I'm not a moron like this guy was.

I need to make an Arcanite Reaper eventually, for now the Ice Barbed Spear I got from Alterac Valley will have to do, even though everyone and his dog has it.

Vymp...that was more then what this idiot did. Playing the warrior enough....one can easily tank being exactly what you are doing, and he couldn't do that. It looked like all he did was shout and spam heroic strike, with an occasional Mortal Strike.

It was just embarassing to watch, and took forever because literally the other three squishes would draw too much aggro, and sorry the Pally sucks at pulling aggro away.

Yeah, the Ice Barbed is funny. Literally it's a decent Spear, easily gotten and everyone loves it, because it's not half bad. Currently Arcanite Reaper is the love of most casual Warriors with many of the MC/Oxy raiding warrior now using the Spinal Reaper.

Heh, I loved Hurtgen back when I played stock CoD. Of course, I was never a sniper. 90% of the time I was just a rifleman. And I ruled that map like a king. My butt-kills were always through the roof on that map, and the ownage multiplied by three if I was American, as I had that sexy Garand at my disposal.

I've never found the MGs to be too bad. The annoying thing is that your team will spend five or ten minutes charging across an open field into sniper fire or into the (invariably heavily defended) trenches before someone else gets the bright idea of coming around the back way with you. Then the teams trade places and the cycle continues. Though the real tricky thing to do on that map is to get up on top of the entrances to the tunnels, so people running out to grab the machine gun or join the fight or whatever don't see you and you can mow them down like cattle from your perch.

I do like Bocage. Always fun to watch the two or three complete numbskulls on each team line up to get shot off the airplane wing in a pathetic attempt to snipe.

Here's a video I got from a friend. I think it's off bigboys.com anyways. It's fucking hillarious, but that's besides the point. Where this sucks, it's not quite as bad for me. I've never played WoW but it applies to Galaxies quite easily. I used to have to form up Imperial players to counter attack Rebel players at times, and I'd always get that one asshole like this guy. Just watch and laugh.

America's Army:

When your on offense, that doesn't mean you should line up nicely single-file for defense to take potshots at. You should advance, but cover & suppressive fire are important.

It gets annoying when your on offense and half your teammates rambo ahead and get themselves killed. Then, while your working to provide cover for your surviving teammates and whittle down the defense a bit, they start calling you a camper. I will advance, but only if I'm either the last man standing, or I've got somebody who's giving me some cover fire and keeping their heads down.
