Okay, I haven't seen ep 3 and I don't know much about the EU. So I'm wondering, who were winning the clone wars?
Was it the CIS (until they pulled the plug on the droid armies) or was it the Jedi and the clonetroopers? (until order 66)

the Sith (the Republic and the CIS were at somewhat of stalemate at that point (sure the republic would have won eventually, as after the death of the main leaders the CIS existed in name only (Sidious was the only thing keeping the CIS united)))

The CIS was being pushed back. It was unlikely to win, at that stage, unless it bought enough time to comple the Great Weapon.

What brings up an interesting question:

Would Sidious have allowed the war to continue until the "GreatWeapon" was close to be finished or did the events of LoE and RotS force him to accelerate his shedule?
