Online games for the finanically broken?

Hi all,

Just a question to the gaming gurus out there. Ive been on the net since I was 16, yet I have never once played an Online game. Im partial to RPG's and RTS mostly, even if Im not that good. What Im really asking is does anyone know of some decent Online games that dont cost anything to play? Even though Id like to try WoW, I cant really afford it.

Gunbound and Navy Field are both entertaining, but it's the kind of 'You play the same damn 5 minutes over and over and over again' game from Korea. You'll tire of it fast, especially since it takes weeks to get the newbiest peice of anything.

I personally enjoy MUSHing, a good way to RP and stuff while you're at it. Kingdom of Loathing is a good MUD-like graphical MMORPG that's out there... em. Yeah.

You are correct. You buy the game and play to your hearts content, never having to pay another dime. Well... until the expansions come out, at which point you'd probably want to buy those.

I just bought a copy for $50. It's not too cheap, but no more than a standard new PC game.

Are there servers for european players? If not do you have any idea what the ping is like from there? Or is it irrelevent outside of the cities?

Are there servers for european players? If not do you have any idea what the ping is like from there? Or is it irrelevent outside of the cities?

There's servers for the Americas, Europe, and Asia (Korea, at least). Upon registering you declare your allegiance/server location and any PvP as well some end-game PvE content is affected by this.

America's Army is pretty good for the realism camp, although you have to go through several "training" missions to unlock the fun stuff.

Still, when you get to kit out your own M4A1, you can get anything from a mini-machine gun to a mini-sniper rifle. Very fun on maps.

If you're looking for something fairly D&D-ish, and are behind on the times by four or five years (like yours truely) I suppose that Diablo II and Lord of Destruction are sort of the thing to go to. I don't think Battle.net costs anything, and you can pick the games up on the cheap - I just picked up the Battlechest for something around 25 smackers,, and the multi-player's supposedly legendary.

Give me a ring in a few weekss once I finish the SP campaign and start going all multi-player - if you decide to go that way, maybe we could pair up.

WARNING: Diablo 2 is crack. And yeah, it goes on the cheap with the Battle Chest (D1, D2, LoD Xpack, failry useless strategy guide). But once you start... well, it will eventually get old, as is the wont of all video games, but until then it can be quite addictive. It doesn't help that 1.10 is still shit as far as I'm concerned...

Speaking of which: Single-player is nothing, I wouldn't even bother with it. The real experience of Diablo 2 is on bnet.

It's better on bnet because you can play with other people; it helps if they are your friends in real life, though. Not to mention you can trade shit (you know that badass item your barb picked up for a sorc? Now it's useful!) for stuff you actually want. To top it all off, you will die less because there are other people there to help you fight, though understand that for each person that enters the game, the monsters become that many times harder--but it is still easier, in my experience.

Yeah, but I need something to do (until I get a proper keyboard - then Descent III steps in) until that magical hour of 6 PM when I get the phone line all for myself, plus I've got to work on builds and getting to know the game better.

Upon reading Superman's asertion of Soldat, I downloaded it, concluding it had to be good.

And it is soooo good. I've been spending several hours honing my skills against the bots (which are pretty good unless they get stuck in some stupid spot or wont move).

I find that Diablo II is ultimately less stressful and annoying offline; the people even on the non-open realms are frustratingly stupid, vicious, useless, and prone to cheat. I'd rather take my time going through quests by myself.

I don't play often enough anymore to keep a realm character active, and I don't dare step into an Open game with my single-player characters without a recent backup of the save files. There's been a hacker in every game, and half the time they stand outside town killing anyone who steps outside.

I guess D2's probably changed a lot since I gave it up. Maybe bnet is a little be more of a hostile place then I remember it.
