I also have something called ZWAX which is causing SSD to hang up and be unable to comlete a scan. Help!

Yep, that's the Control Panel entry for a C-media soundcard. Seeing as it looks to just be a control panel, you can probably safely disable it.

Gil Hamilton: I don't see any sort of spyware or worms active in your log, so it looks like whatever fix you've applied has kept it from starting. srv32.exe is part of a worm, however, so I'd recommend restarting in Safe Mode and deleting the file. If it comes back, heavier measures will be needed.

Also, for future wipes and reinstalls, be sure to never connect the network cable on a fresh install until a firewall is loaded (Kerio, Zone Alarm, or whatever). It might help if you keep a CD on hand with the latest service pack and an up-to-date firewall on it, then make a beeline for the Windows Update site as soon as you get online to grab any other patches released since the last SP. Unpatched Windows will get eaten alive by Blaster variants if you leave it in the default state.

EDIT: Well, everyone I've talked to including you, Datana, said that it's most likely the Sasser Worm. I've downloaded/installed the pertinent security patch from Microsoft and then ran the Symantec fix for the Sasser Worm, which didn't find it. However, the problem seems to be resolved as I haven't been having any problems with it since I installed the security patch and as said, the Sasser fix couldn't find it. I seem to be fixed. Thanks again, Datana. I owe you.

Gil: You're getting infected again almost as soon as you log in, judging by the error code (which is the classic response to a new Sasser or Blaster infection rather than the old one acting up again). Can you update your antivirus signatures and erect a firewall? You probably won't be able to clear this off permanently until you wall off ports 139 and 445 (for which you'll need a firewall), then apply the necessary updates to Windows.

Also, what worm is Norton reporting you have? If you can get the name, I might be able to find more detailed information in terms of removing it, but again, having your system fully patched first is a prerequisite.

If you're getting knocked into a restart before you can get any updates, do the following (save these instructions if you can't remember them):
- Unhook your network cable.
- Restart Windows.
- CTRL-R to get the Run prompt, then type "shutdown -i" (without the quotes), then hit Enter.
- Change the shutdown time to some really high number (this is defined in seconds; it defaults to 20 seconds).
- Reconnect the cable and grab whatever updates you want; you should be able to buy yourself a few hours with this trick, letting you patch your box and download/install a firewall.

Bleh. Worms like this are exactly why I think that XP's become completely too insecure for a general user to use these days. [EDIT: Clarification: Prepatched with SP2 is a much better deal -- I'm talking about SP1 or unpatched that are headaches.]

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I need serious fucking help.

After I got this "thing" installed, I've been having all sorts of crazy trouble. processes I have no clue about start, random dos windows open and crash, and IE window opens and REFUSES TO STAY CLOSES (Seriously, another one opens every time I close it. They don't even go anywhere, it just leads to a "Page cannot be displayed )it randomly runs MSN and logs in as me, then repeatedly sends links to everyone online (This is how I was suckered; the link installs it.)

Running Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG in safemode did precisely JACK. Trying to run Hjack This in normal mode failed (it just died before I coudl do anything) but running it in safemode produced this:

Ok, this is going to require some work on your part. Are you using Windows XP Pro or Home?

If it is home, it gets much harder todo.

For Windows XP Pro:

Extract HijackThis to a known location.

Run "secpol.msc", go to the section "Software Restriction policies" "Additional Rules".

Make sure

Are set to "unrestricted". Need those so windows will load to the desktop. And more importantly you need these to undo the changes you are about to make.

If not, you can create them by right-clicking and going "New path rule...".

At an absolute minium you need to run;

"mmc.exe" is the really important fucker, if you dont want to leave your computer ultra hardlocked.

If

exists, flip it from "unrestricted" to "disallowed"

Now add new path rules to were HijackThis, Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG are, with "unrestricted" access.

Now to nuke some of those bad things; Path rules to disallow the following;

C:\WINDOWS\runservice.exe
VTPreset.exe
newdll2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fm27clv1.exe

Now go to "Security levels" and Double click "Disallowed" and set as default. Reboot into safemode, commence nuking.

To undo, run mmc.exe and switch "Disallowed" to "unrestricted" and delete any rules you created. Done!
