Quick question about zip.

Post by brianeyci »

I need to transfer files onto my laptop through floppies. Unfortunately, I can't install any kind of splitting program/zip program other than what is already on this computer (UltimateZip) because it's a limited account. I cannot run any executable files either. So I am stuck.

Is there a way to split the file onto floppies without running an .exe file, or with UltimateZip (if anybody uses this?) UltimateZip lets me create multivolume sets. The problem is that you need to have UltimateZip installed on the computer you want to extract it to, and the install program for UltimateZip doesn't fit onto a disk either!

If both systems can access the internet post the files you need to transfer to a yahoo briefcase and swap them that way. It has a limit of 25 mb and it uses your yahoo ID.

At least it gets around having to install any software onto the limited account.

Try using a USB flash drive.

Or use your 2+GB Gmail inbox.

Your ISP might also have a bit of webspace available (Skynet, for example, gives about 50 MB), but you'll need an FTP program.

The hell ? If it just zips the file, Winzip/Winrar should be able to extract it just fine...

Do you have highspeed internet access? If so, I'd suggest using You Send It. A really handy webservice that lets you email up to 1 gig to an individual. The link only lasts for 7 days, but for sending huge files when other options aren't viable, this method works really well. Even better than gmail, if you need to send files larger than 14 megs.

You should be able to use any normal zip program to create a disk spanning archive. You can select the spanning option and then will be asked to provide block size (if you make the disk spanning zip file to the HD initially). Specify 1.36 MB block size, that's the maximum that will fit on a single 1.44 MB floppy. Then just copy the zip fragments onto disks one by one, copy them to the other machine and extract. Problem solved.

Of course, the jury recommends spending $30 on a USB memory stick, as long as you work with stuff that has native USB support, no more problems, ever.
