I was in Manchester today shopping and saw the new issue of Empire. Sadly, it didn't have a review (nice big feature on WOTW though), but the review is now up on their site. It can be found here. If Empire say it's great (and others say they were too harsh), then it gets my vote. Ebert can suck a donkey off, I've never liked that guy who seems to take strips off the arse of every film I like now.

I agree with the Cruise comments. I haven't seen any of the stuff, but I have heard many Yanks on IMDb.com go on about him to the point that every other thread was asking whether he's tainted the movie and even Paramount told him to shut the fuck up. But if he still acts fine onscreen and it's a movie iidea I love, I'm a seeing it.

At this point I think the film is going to be a disappointment to the studio. Sure, it'll probably make money, the DVD sales will guarantee that, but I don't think it will be the blockbuster they were hoping for.

Local reviewer gave it 3/5. Said the special effects were good, acting was mediocre, and Dakota Fanning should give Tom Cruise acting lessons (OK, the last part I exaggerated...he said Fanning fit her role better than Cruise fit his).

I'm not interested in seeing a 3/5 movie, given how bad the local paper bloats scores.

Damn. It's a shame that I am going to miss this movie given it's reviews. Tom cruise's behavior of late is reprehensible, and I will not support this movie until he apologizes or outright straightens up. If this "Blockbuster" Makes zero money for the studios, they may be less willing to hire him to do more films, which no dbout means diddly to him, as much money as he has, but hopefully it will result in disappointment for him in the future. He should learn that movie star |= immunity from consequence.

Sorry Tom. Suck the Depakote out of my asshole.

I have no desire to see this film. The previews turned me off bigtime- if the movie is anything like the previews, 3/4 of the movie will be that annoying little blond shit screaming and looking scared.

Just came back from seeing it. It has its flaws, but the first 2/3 of the movie is a perfect exercise in dread and hopelessness. Spielberg got the tone just right.

Most of the reviews point out the ending as a flaw (and some the running time), but since the ending is no shock to me, that won't factor into the final score.

I thought the last third was where most of the flaws were. It turned into too much of a standard action movie. A good action movie, to be sure, but it was jarring compared to the first 2/3rds, and it really didn't fit the tone of the rest of the film.

I don't think I'm giving away any spoilers by saying the ending is the same as it's always been, but it does come on you abruptly. I like the way the George Pal version handled it better, honestly.

I saw it yesterday with my boss... I'm going to go see it on an IMAX I think... the special effects were very good, and the acting was really good, imo. The son kind of annoyed me, but I got past it. I'll give it a 4.5/5

I re-read the book last year.
I know that they die because of the c bacteria and their lack of natural defenses, I simply forgot to say that cold= germs in it.

The Cold, in this case, referring to the COMMON Cold. Amazingly, this ailment is something caused by germs.

Just watched the movie and thought it was OK.
For me I had no knowledge from the books and the ending just killed it for me. WTF!

The imagery was amazing. I have to say this is one of the best films I've seen in the theater.

I do think the ending was a bit abrupt, but the Half-Life 2 scene at the end with the bazookas made up for it.

It's a perfectly reasonable ending. Or would you rather have an ID4 one with the US saving the day and thus ruining the whole concept of humanity being the bitch of a bigger "might makes right" power out there?

Strangely enough, I remember similiar thoughts about the ending of the Tim Burton version of Planet of the Apes. If you'd ever read the book of POTA, you'd know it was pretty close to the book ending, while Heston's version was a classic, the Burton version was closer.

Just got back from it a couple of hours ago. The characters were really fucking annoying, but everything aside from them worked really well.

I too thought the ending was rather abrupt.

My biggest disappointment was not getting to see an attempted nuclear attack on one of the walkers.
