I don't know why, but when I read the title to this topic I thought to myself 'Discovery'. Usually I think of stupid names like 'Hood' or 'Warspite', but in this case 'Discovery' seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I'd go with RN names that aren't too militaristic. I really can't stand naming ships after people most the time unless they truly earnt it, which is likely why I dislike most modern USN names. Places are okay for names, but ideas and mythos work better such as Vigilant or Griffin.
The role of the ship should dictate the name.
