I could never figure out MOO2, mostly because the manual was destroyed by an errant glass of water.

No manual in MOO2, no movies in Red Alert 2...-sigh-

You couldn't figure out Moo2? It's official, we have found our new

The game had a EXTENSIVE HELP SYSTEM built into it!`

 That game had one of the best inbuilt help systems I've encountered..

It was quite easy to figure out anyway. Yeah it's fairly complex but it's pretty logical for the most part.

Oh my days as a newbie thinking nuclear missiles would be the greatest weapon :D

I soon got over that when my 'mighty' fleet got killed by a single enemy destroyer

Do missiles actually do ANYTHING in that game?

Yes. If they're rammed up your tailpipe with MIRV and EMG. Instead of dealing with 1500+ hp you only have to deal with 60-70 hp. Ouch.

Missiles kick ass. Beam weapons are ok.

My entire fleet consisted at the end of nothing but Doomstars+battle pods with masses nuclear missiles and all the upgrades

The computer favored that option too....

Missiles also divert firepower as they attempt to shoot them down, and in the early phases of the game can do considerable damage.

In the later parts, I once rigged a Doom Star with ultra-miniaturized MIRV, EMG Zeon missiles (another one used overloaded enveloping plasma torpedos).

I got it working, and I'm playing.

But all my planets keep starving, I have shit for production, and a volley of three really small rockets takes out my frigates. Gah.

Transfer workers to farming- build freighters- research hydroponic farms.

1 freighter=1 unit of food, I never needed more than say 10 freighters (2 fleets) though- all my research was a drive for self-sufficiency in food production (radiation shields for the fucked up planets, then terraforming, farms etc)

Most likely your capital world will have to deal with the food needs of your colonies until they're up and running

If you find an ultra poor terran planet, colonize it and turn it into a super farm, so you can divert your capital world's farmers to industry and science

Ahh well my battles had a habit of being over before the missiles could hit (70 doom stars with 6 stellar converters = not much enemy fleet left at end of turn)

I never used Stellar Converters. I generally used miniaturized AF HV Phasors (or HV Plasma) guns with a bunch of specials to back them up. I could kill far more ships than using the SCs.

Hmmm... Yellow may mean depleted and red may mean destroyed. Or w.r.t torps, red may mean wait 2 turns and yellow may mean wait 1 turn, because torps take 2 turns to recharge.

Red means that the weapon will not be fired in this combat round. It will be used, however, if the enemy closes or fires missile weaponry (assuming that it isn't a HV mount gun). Yellow means that when you click on an enemy said weapon will hold fire. You can use this tactic to optimize your attack.

For instance, you may wish to fire SP weapons first, then conventional weapons then AP weapons. You might want to withold some guns for point-defense as well.

I almost always hold back some for point defense work. All attack is rarely the best option in my experience, but then I suck at the game

Being a crazy batard I always like to go in all guns forward. I mean, when you kill al your enemies before they kill you your armor is irrelevant.

Win the battle of the first salvo en? That never worked out well in real life. Anyway it was rare that I could wipe out a really large chunk of a hostile fleet with my first shots.
