Hell, there are people (including Peter David, apparently) who think Mace Windu survived the force lightning and fall.

How the hell do these characters get so popular? Wedge had maybe 10 minutes of screen time in the OT. Boba Fett became an uber-badass when his greatest achievement in the films was following the Falcon through space. Aayla is never mentioned by name in the PT and is shown (that I know of) ONCE. Quinlan? I don't think he was ever in the PT, but I don't even know what he looks like. How is it that characters acquire cult followings simply by surviving/looking cool/looking pretty/being mentioned once or twice?

Aayla Secura was a EU character George Lucas became fond of (that's why she's in EP2)

While Aayla and Fett are less explainable, Wedge can be explained easily. He's the only Rebel pilot that isn't a main character to survive the entire Trillogy. He was in both Death Star runs. He's one of the best goddamned pilots in the galaxy.

Aayla is never mentioned by name in the PT and is shown (that I know of) ONCE.
She has two scenes in AOTC and ROTS respectively, AOTC: IN the Temple Atrium, and on Geonosis/ROTS: Hologram and Death Scene.
Quinlan? I don't think he was ever in the PT, but I don't even know what he looks like
Quinlan's followers come mostly from his major role in the Clone Wars comics. He is possibly in Ep. 1 in the background, but it may be just another Kiffar.

Just to add Aayla was a popular character before AOTC which is why GL noticed her.

He's also the only non-main character seen giving Luke a welcome back during the ROTJ ending. Badassitude like that has got to be respected. :P

When did Wedge command an SSD? They had Lusankya, but he never captained her.

Wedge was captain for a short time. That time when Rogue Squadron had over a hundred ships.

And why is Wedge so popular? Look at my banner.
What is Project Zohar?

IIRC, he was using an SSD as his command ship in one of the Crimson Empire comics

There are Star Wars stories outside of the films, you know...

Incidentally, the Kiffar on Tatooine was indeed Quin.

While that explains Vos and Secura, it doesn't really explain the cult of Boba Fett. There was virtually no EU material at the time of ESB and he still became hugely popular. (Indeed, the sheer amount of Boba-wank in the later EU was merely filling the pre-existing demand.)

I think it's mainly because he did nothing that people were able to fill the gap with mental imagery of him being leet.

Another reason I've heard is the "He's no good to me dead." bit. Standing up to Vader and all that.

He flew his flag from NRS Lusankya but never actually captained her, IIRC.

More detail: In Starfighters of Adumar, its mentioned that after he became a general, he left Rogue Squadron and took command of the Lusankya Task Force.

He later commanded it to suicide Executor style. :p

Yeah, all we know about Fett pre-ESB is from the Holiday Special, right?

He isn't even mentioned by name at all until ROTJ with Han's mumbled "Boba Fett? Boba Fett? Where?" before sending him into the side of the sail barge!

He was based on an unused concept for Vader.

And later was going to be used as a super stormtrooper, with three times the crappy shooting ability.

Why Fett is cool? It's all about the helmet.

Still unanswered:

While we're at it, let's add to the list:

Kit Fisto, who only received a "glancing blow" from Palpatine's lightsaber. He wasn't cut in half like Darth Maul!

Plo Koon, who managed to survive the explosion by "using the force" and floated down to the suface below safely!

Last and certainly not least...Darth Vader! Yes, boys and girls...he faked his own death in front of his son after giving some hammy speech. The helmet part was icing. Anyway, he even managed to survive a funeral pyre, then he projected a fake illusion of himself, further deceiving Luke and others about the truth of his demise. Darth Vader shall return!!
:wanker:

Star Wars isn't a saturday morning cartoon. Characters fucking die. Deal with it.

Edit- I know they have star wars cartoons, but that's not what I mean
