It largely depends. If I have to spend time thinking about what I'm typing (such as writing up a paragraph on a message board), then my typing speed is around 60-70 wpm. If I'm simply taking a typing test and just copying down what I see on the paper onto the screen, then I can go as fast as 115wpm. Though for simply copying around 80wpm is the comfort zone, as anything faster risks straining my wrists to the point of being extremely sore.

With common words, e.g. during IM or normal emails, I can hit over 80wpm. But with more specialised text it slows down to about 60-70wpm. When writing programming code, it's probably about 2wpm overall .

I can type pretty fast (50-60?), but the amount of time spent checking for typos doubles the time taken. Curse this dark keyboard.

I can type 30-40 wpm off the top of my head, but I can type 50 wpm transcribing.

After a year of keyboarding class in highschool, I was typing 65WPM.
Years later, I did a few of the typing tests in the program our school district uses to teach typing (All The Right Type). Depending on test (You have any idea how hard it is to go back to early stages and type terribly unnatural sentences using restricted keys?), I get anywhere from 60 to 117wpm, usually with 100% accuracy (I go back and correct immediately. Funny thing, though, I'm often too fast for the software. I'll get to the end of one of its lines (where it's a space, not an enter), and it'll register the space, and I'll go to the next line, but the program keeps the next word on the previous line, marking it as an error. And it's uncorrectable).
Needless to say, the 5th graders watching me on the LCD projecter were in awe.

I usually type around 80-90wpm. How many of the exceptionally fast typers actually use home row? When I was forced to use it for a mandatory keyboarding class I slowed down to around 30-40.

Home row? Use it all the time. If anything being forced to work within it helped improve my speed drastically. I can probably type a bit faster if I deviate slightly from it, but not by much as I'm far too used to it.Losonti Tokash wrote:I usually type around 80-90wpm. I'm going with Chardok. That program thanks Pu-239, kind of fucked me up because the next word I would get to or it would jump ahead would turn blue, plus my shit was going colors at the bottom. However, here are my test results. Maybe I'll keep practicing with it till the changes don't affect me.

Edit: Oh, and I don't really type the "proper" way either. My fingers are rarely on the home row - I just have all the key positions memorized. Its kinda like pecking, but with 9 fingers :P
Last time I tested myself I got around 50 wpm.

Hmm, according to that typing program from Pu-239, I can do 99WPM Net at 96% accuracy, first go.
I think it's way too generous. The last time I checked I was allegedly only in the 60s range. Not to mention I wasn't typing really as fast as I could, what with somebody yelling at me to do something else productive at that time.
With that program, take with grain of salt.

I have a ten year old certificate that officially certifies that I can type at 45 WPM.
Using an online typing-test, like this one I can type somewhere between 60-80 WPM.

I can type about 60 WPM when I am taking the tests and typing the giberish. If I can understand the sentences and reasonable predict what is going to be said I can type a little faster. I know that when I am typing what I want to type I can type even faster, but 60 WPM is a good benchmark for me.

That test is a bit screwy. I had to wait for the words to scroll by, which wound up slowing me down somewhat.GrandMasterTerwynn wrote:I have a ten year old certificate that officially certifies that I can type at 45 WPM.

The best I've ever gotten was 80 WPM with 99% accuracy, without numbers and symbols, though. With those, I was down to about 40 with the same accuracy. Though I don't use those, so I don't remember them anymore, and my overall typing is probably less these days.
