Top 25 Unknown Science Questions

Post by The Grim Squeaker »

Top two:
the Universe Made Of?

In recent decades, scientists have discovered that the ordinary matter that makes up stars, planets, even human beings, accounts for only 5 percent of everything in the universe. The rest belongs to dark matter and dark energy, phenomena that scientists are just now learning about.

What is dark matter made of and where does it reside? What is dark energy? Researchers hope to find answers.

What Is the Biological Basis of Consciousness?

In the 17th century, French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes declared that mind and body are entirely separate, leaving the debate over the nature of consciousness to other philosophers.

Today scientists are challenging that notion with a view that consciousness arises from the properties and the organization of neurons in the brain. Experimental work to unravel those properties and processes has only just begun.
I knew about the first one (Dark matter) but the second is is only known to me from a philosophy course on Descartes.

Do you think that they should have added/Subtracted from the list?

There's an interesting article on the whole mind/brain duality bit here.

I wonder, if there's anything at all to the many worlds hypothesis or the eleven dimensional universe theory could all this mass represent the folded dimensions or alternate timelines?

err, rather not.
A couple of nitpicks.
It's Many worlds interpretation and string theory (personally I would even say string hypothesis as I do not regard it as well tested, alas the people working in the field disagree).

I would say that the problem is not that there dark enery, but rather that there is not enough.

Ah... I'm almost postive that Hawking and most physicists only postulate a 10-dimensional universe.

Descarte, of course, could have been disproven even back in his day on the idea that the mind and body are totally seperate with a simple glass of something alcoholic.

And today I learned a new concept; the Alien Hand Syndrome. Having an evil hand that you cannot control without the help of the other hand must be one of the most frightening, and at the same time, coolest diseases ever. I had no idea that shit could actually happen!

There has been at least one known case where a man had an extra face Voldemort style on his neck/back, which was independent, now that's freaky.

And about the alchohol/duality, Descartes did say that the brain served as a portal between the two part's and that it was possible to distort it, thus making it appear that the "spirit" was being affected when only it's perceptions of what the body did was.
(I think, i'm a bit rusty on the subject)

As an aside, you could achieve something somewhat similar through 'The Stranger', i.e. jacking yourself off after sitting on your own hand for a while until it goes numb.... feels like someone pulling you off.

LOL, they did that in Dr. Strangelove. Remember when Strangelove's hand kept trying to strangle him while he was talking?

Yes, the brain is a portal into the Warp, which is where your soul actually is!

Personally, I prefer the example presented by Evil Dead II.
