Good deal for an upgrade?

Post by Captain tycho »

I'll be coming into alot of money soon (maybe, but here's hoping  ) Anyways, I've been idly browsing newegg, and think I've found a good deal.

AMD64 4000+ San Diego for 474USD, ASUS A8N ATX SLI for 150 and a brand spanking new 7800GTX from BFG for 619, for a grand total of 1263USD. This is pretty much the stuff I'm set on getting as soon as the money comes in, and I'm wondering if I'm overlooking a glaring detail in this setup.

He dosn't. Notice that hes keeping over all the former components, thats money saving at work.

Tycho, I'd suggest if you go with single core, either go for a Venice 3500+ or if there is a Venice 3800+. Duel core is insanely expensive today so don't.

Also, don't forget you need that new RAM, with yours being slow.

It depends on his needs, I say. There's no speed advantage to dual core, but the ability to encode video and such while still being able to use the computer is easily worth the extra money to some people.

There are speed advantages to dual-core processors but only if your application is multithreaded and your I/O can feed the CPU fast enough.

You have SLI and you want to buy only one graphics card? Why get one when you could get two for less.

No he couldn't, a pair of 66GT's are PATHETIC compared to a single 7800GTX.

But for $600, you can easily buy a pair of 6800GT's. The real reason to go with a single card is if you're considering a future upgrade. It's hard to upgrade if your card slots are already used up, but buying a 7800 by itself allows you to add a second card if you come into some more money in the future.

I know, however, a pair of 6800GT's lose out to a single 7800GTX in many cases.
Unless you seriously want SLI, go for a single card, because a 7800GTX is just kick ass.
And for 600$? the LOWEST I've seen for a 68GT has been 379$, two of those is more then 700.

Newegg has regularly priced PCI-Express 6800GTs starting at ~$350 and a couple with rebates that come out even lower. AGP versions start at ~$280.

Your mostly spending money on the warrenty, which IS one of the best out there.

Uranium, if hes going for an A8N, its PCI-E, and 350$(rebates, are temp, and shouldn't be counted) times two is still more then 600$.

SLI doesn't even work for many games, being driver-enabled for each game and all. Once you consider heat and power consumption, I wouldn't go with a dual card solution even if it did push higher framerates than a 7800 GTX, which it doesn't. Besides, you can SLI with a 7800 GTX too, so if the games 1-2 years start to exceed the card, you can get another one then.

SLI works for the games hes playing. Which kinda helps him. But yes, heat and power.
Not to mention, a 7800GTX takes LESS power then a 6800U.

My plan is get a single 7800GTX for now, then, later this year, grab another one. And since this is going to be entirely a gaming rig, I'm not touching a duel-core CPU, since I do absolutely nothing that a duel-core would help out.

You can get the 7800GTX for much less than that depending on where you look.

$556.16 at dell.com, $491.16 after using a code

A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. I'm getting a BFG 7800GTX, which is faster than the vanilla card, comes pre-overclocked, has a better onboard fan (IIRC), and runs better in total.

Also, I could use some good LCD recommendations, good HD recommendations, PSU, stuff like that, since I'm pretty much in the dark about that stuff. Keep in mind I *will* be overclocking both the gpu and the cpu, so I would like to know a good cooling system too.

Not to mention, BFG IS LIFETIME warrenty.
HD's..I'll suggest a DiamondMax 10 16MB cache, preformance equilivent to a Raptor, but at 250GB its great.
LCD's...get a Dell.
PSU..Antec Truepower 2.0, Highest rating you can get for that PC.
