Star Trek Online
Forgive me if this topic has come up before but from what i'v read about it on Startrek.com it sounds awsome. Being able to join a starship with a ton of players doing there own little job on the ship and being able to go exploring on difernt planets.
I know your thinking thats just like Star Wars galaxies but to my knowledge there is no starship players can be apart of. No commanding a SSD or other large ships. But in STO you can be the capten of an Akira or the helmsman an Engineer tactical/security officer.
Now to me that sounds great being able to boared other ships while there sheild are down and steal there technolagy or to capture the bridge. You see i love Startrek just as much as Star Wars but the idea of being apart of a ships crew sounds more fun then single ship flying in SWG. But thats just my opinion. Altho X-wings and TIE's clashing in space is very cool indeed.
I would like to get some other veiws tho. If SWG every dose Player controled starships then it would be the better of the two i think.

Here's a link to the article on ST.com.
To be honest, it doesn't sound that bad. But, as you said Praxis, you can only be Starfleet -- and you can't own a ship! (actually that shouldn't be surprising)
Wouldn't mind playing it, but I can't see myself going out and buying it.

You are right on both counts but on Startrek.com thay have said that in later expansions there well be more races to chose from.
As for the money im assuming that there well be some sort of rank based system to get better items like in Planet side

Honestly, I can see such a game being interesting, assuming certain liberties are taken with the Star Trek Universe. Otherwise, I have to say, playing a Starfleet Ensign doesn't really appeal to me. Woop-dee-doo, I sit at a terminal for five hours, running diagnostics or recalibrating the shield array. Meanwhile, if an attack comes on your ship, your life will depend on the people running the weapons systems or something, and what happens if your ship gets destroyed?
Too many what-ifs for me right now. I'd have to see a really convincing development document to see if it were even worth a look.

Here are my thoughts on doing things like recalibrating a shield array or something:Hotfoot wrote:Honestly, I can see such a game being interesting, assuming certain liberties are taken with the Star Trek Universe. take a page from yahoo Puzzle pirates. Make mundane jobs semi-interesting. doing a tetris or bejewelled-like puzzle, and, based on the efficiency of your copmletion of a puzzle, or the high score or something, that's the efficiency of the shields. Or, in the case of an attack, how well you copmlete the puzzles keeps the shields up longer/repairs them.
That's not true at all. Especially if you have a close-knit group of guys. When I played CoH, I had a set group of badasses I went adventurin' with, and after the first two times, we were like a well-oiled machine.Temjin wrote:Any MMOG that relies on cooperation between players is doomed from the start.
Imagine a starship run by SDNetters. Mein Gott, we would be the scourge of the galaxy (class *snicker*) We would name our ship "Devastator" or "Executor" and our ships insignia would be *duh* the imperial seal. That would be the shizzle for rizzle, my dizzle.

Oh, I agree. Get a good group of smart people together, and you could have a lot of fun with this game.
Unfortunately, good smart people seem make up only 20% of a online game's playerbase. The other 80% seem to be made up of idiotic assholes. That's the part I'm worried about.

Would we be stuck at our consoles or do we have free rein of the ship? I was daydreaming of a game like this and I laughed out loud at the possibilities of mayhem I could bring if I had free rein of the ship. Instead of calibrating the sensors, why not go and get a phaser and vape the captain? Head over to engineering and overload the warp core. Imagine the possibilities!! Imagine the terror that can be caused!!!Hotfoot wrote:Honestly, I can see such a game being interesting, assuming certain liberties are taken with the Star Trek Universe.
