A brand name perhaps is the most accurate way to describe it. The US has totally blasted Al-Qaeda, a label it actually mostly created following 9/11 as a name for Osama's little bunch. The media however, has overplayed it to seem like an insidious organization much like say... Cobra, or the Brotherhood of Nod or SMERSH or whatever, to look like a global terrorist superfaction. The truth of course, is that these bunch have no leadership structure outside their own cells of 10-20 nutcases, and any 'communication' is limited at best.
It's like saying SDNers are a political movement. No we aren't. But there's a lot of people here with various views that are similar in some cases, but different in others... just frequenting the same place to chat and stuff.
None of the news reports I have seen have said that no one has come forward to claim responsability.
The coordination of the attack does suggest Al Qaeda involvment, but with the G8 summit going on I wouldnt rule out eco-terrorists. Plus, I just hope its a bad coincidence that this happened in London the day after they were named to host the Olympics.
Remember people that if the original statement claiming responsibility was in Arabic, the name of the group can be interpreted also otherwise, because "al qaida" means "base" or "headquarters" in Arabic. A lot of those extremists have screwed up names for their groups, and this might be another one of those even though it doesn't necessarily have any connection to Osama bin Laden's group. The name might be deliberately picked to be ambiguous so that anybody who does go after them will have to sift through a smokescreen and chase down phantom leads in other directions.

This came as a total shock to me. I was on Wikipedia this morning and saw it. I have some family in Britain, but fortunately there all ok. Too bad I can't say the same for everyone

They sure do seem like COBRA in the media. Hope Destro doesn't show up.

Apparently this particular group has claimed responsibility for exploding for Allah before when in actuality they hadn't. It's too soon to tell who is the culprit here.

Could the bombs have been Cell-Phone Operated, and the British shutdown of the phone networks after the detonation have stopped it? Or am I out on a limb here?

As far as I'm aware eco terrorists have never killed anybody, to go from property damage and intimidation to mass transit bombs without a warning would be quite a leap.

As I understand it mobiles are frequently used by terroists as triggers as they were in the madrid attacks, as such shutting down the phone networks might seem a reasonable measure. However I seem to remember reading that some of the unexploded phones they recovered in Madrid were set to go off using the alarm rather than a phone call or message so shutting down the networks may be of limited use.

It's the fucking religious nutjobs again.
The world has got to come up with an effective strategy to deal with people who think blowing other people up is somehow acceptable.
Honestly, I don't see any way to deal with them by force. All terrorists need is a small cell for a big attack. They don't need an infrastructure, so you can't find this infrastructure and blow it up.
I said absolutely nothing about force in my statement. Nothing at all.
We need a more effective strategy. I don't give a damn what it is, whether it's quiet, loud, stealthy, out in the open, or what have you, as long as it works.

To my limited knowledge, "ecoterrorists" have never been this indiscriminate. They do things like burn down the fields or buildings of a company they don't like or plant tree spikes that can hurt loggers. They aren't known for attacking people at random.

That was Rogue 9, my point still stands though, lunging at somebody with a hammer in a panic because they caught you tree spiking is still a world away from suicide bombing double decker buses.

That's another point; I've never seen suicidal tendancies from the extreme greens.

You mean apart from the fruitarians? (though I do admit that's suicide in the same way smoking is)
I still think that this is a wonderful example of "dumbfuck terrorism".
And now, a brief guide to "dumbfuck terrorism".
Step 1 - Choose a country which has been having tumultuous political rivalries and heated clashes in parliament and the media over any number of "War on Terror"-related issues and has every chance of pulling yet more of its forces out of the Middle East.
Step 2 - Wait until all of the worlds media is already focused on that nation and everyone with the capacity to reduce your country of origin to a nice glass carpark and then occupy it from now until eternity is gathered in aforementioned nation.
Step 3 - Blow something up, not enough to do any *real* damage or break morale, more like the weedy guy in the shower-room flicking the 7'6" monster on the arse with a wet towel instead of shooting him in the head with .50cal. Crushing despair, not righteous retribution is what you want to elicit.
Step 4 - Start making bullshit claims. Sit back. Feel special. Wait for the GBU.
Seriously, what kind of fucking terrorist mastermind thinks this kind of thing up - especially after seeing the response that September 11 got.

*shrug* With all the reports and build up of them being the 'evil genius' memebers of COBRA or Super Villians Are US, perhaps they're still just a bunch of stone aged fuck nuts with a grudge.
I mean I'm pretty gung ho, kick em in the head American but still.....even I know these asshats aren't the Bond Villians. If these Middle Eastern Red Necks could pull off something more *exotic* they most certainly would, but they can't.
Not that the loss of life they do create is any less sad and tragic, just that these guys are really peon's with TNT.

Maybe they want more of what happened after 9.11 and goading the west on and attempting to produce some kind of clash of civilisations for the greater good of allah or some such bullshit could be exactly what they have in mind.
These people aren’t exactly rational, infact they’re religious fanatics and it’s sometimes a mistake with such people to look for a rational aims and objectives behind their actions.
