By god, that would be awesome. 260 lightyears? We could be there by 4500 ad, no sweat.

Deathstars. Lots and lots of Deathstars. Smelting all that metal's going to do wonders for air quality as well.

Any society with FTL drives should find those problems no-brainers.
Ahem.
Look at science fiction. Do you think B5's Earth Alliance could do it, or ST's UFP, or Starfire's Terran Federation, or Starcraft Terrans, or... need I go on? Virtually nobody below the Galactic Empire (SW) could mine this planet. Granted FTL is probably a lot easier in most SFverses than in RL but still, this is a pretty factually baseless claim you have to admit.

Large planet

If we ever do get around to strip mining that planet, I assume we could probably build a million ISD's and several thousand death stars, and there'd still be enough to fuel an industry that would last for years.

Well, hopefully that'll be something my great x8 grandchildren could see. Strip mining a planet discovered before Earth even had FTL transport....

Doubt it would be worth the bother to mine that planet. There is enough materials much easier to access in enough quantities that would not involve trying to lift megatonnes of elements and alloys from a gravity well like that.

Guys, we still have a huge asteroid field and dozens of moons to mine from. We don't need to strip mine that giant rock any time soon

By the time any meaningful human infrastructure can reach there, we will not need its resources.

It's like the Emperor was smiling on me when I read this article. Metal, lots of metal. That's just perfect. And it's only 260 lightyears away! That's perfect for the history of my Epic Novel! Yes!

And is it just me or could everyone else picture the way Lord Wong's face looked when he said it was Unicron? That really made my day. Again.

Was I the only one slightly taken aback by mention of American, Japanese and... Chilean scientists?

Seemed rather like the odd one out to me, for some reason. :)

It'd be relatively easy to land on the planet, but how would you get off? Especially with a cargo of extra metal. And this is ignoring the fact that you'd be crash-land in the most boring way possible onto the planet. The explosion would almost be negligible. After all, gas can't exactly expand in that kind of atmosphere.
