The boneyard...

Post by Van Owen »

Imagine you are a rebel officer in charge of rounding up supplies for the rebellion, and times are tight. You get a tip about what amounts to a Clone Wars era junkyard, and you decide to give it a try. You find: 5 Venator class Carriers, still with their mix of starfighters onboard, and in fairly good shape, 25,000 misc. Battle Droids, the latter model types that didn't need the command ship, and a huge cache of gunships. Are these things of any use to you, and if so what, given the advances in technology since then?

Well the Star Wars universe is fairly stagnant in terms of tech, due to the fact that it's so advanced. I'd say that the Rebels could put it all to good use. Afterall, the Rebels didn't always have the best weapons to fight with in the first place.

Depending on when in the Rebellion we're talking about, 5 fully stocked Venators would represent the bulk of their fleet's firepower. The ground forces would be of somewhat less use, as they really aren't enough to launch an offensive operation. They would be a valuable addition to the defense of any large bases, however.

Quite simply put, you get some nice shinny medals and possible quick promition to Admiral of the Rebel's newest fleet.

Would the fighters really be up to facing the TIEs? I know the rebels used the Z-95 Headhunters, which had to be almost as old...

Z-95s predate TPM, so it would have to be something besides age that determines how well they fare against Imperial fighters.

Givin the rebellions supply situations in some period, I think they would take everything they found.
If its right before ESB, the ground forces could be cruicial.

First, you'd report possible smuggling operations to counter intell (no way that much fire power was left around accidentally.) then you grab everything. If nothing else, claim eminent domain. You just seriously increased the available hardware for the new Republic though to the point of seriously stretching the available manpower. Cost would be neglegible. Finally accept your promotion.

I'd keep the ARCs if not the other fighters. They appear to be superior as heavy starfighters/bombers than the Y-Wings, given the dedicated rear gunner, and certainly appeared more maneuverable in what little bit we saw of them.

Yeah why is it that the Empire gave up the best fighters we've ever seen in SW for TIE fighters, which suck in comparison.

Read again. He didn't say ARCs were better than than TIEs (which weould tear them, apart as well as those droid fighers did.) but that they were better than Y-Wings.

In fact ARC would properly have served better thns Y-Wing at the very least at the battle of Yavin. Imagine the time Vader would have had if people had been shooting back at him.

Stagnation of technology at their already-incredible level means that all that gear is still potent. Even if the ships don't the particular roles you need, they can easily be retrofitted.

I agree with initial assessments: the capital ships and fighters would be a substantial addition to the Alliance's fleet strength, but finding a use for the battle droids would be more difficult.

Btw, since when in the movies do TIE fighters not kick ass?

Finding a use for the droids would be difficult? Well, since you've just found probably more fighters than you have crew, I'd say retrofitting them as pilots would be a plan.

With the Droid Starfighters tearing the ARCs apart they were taking fire so that Obi Wan and Anakin could break through.

What I meant was that the ARCs seem to be more effective then TIE fighters in many regards: firepower, defense ect.

Actualy the base Y-Wing also had a rear gunner who controled the ion cannons, which could swival to cover the rear arc. So it was very likely the ARC's little brother in most ways.

Frankly ARcs would be a poor choice to take into the trench thanks to their much larger target profile. The Death Stars Turbolasers would have had a much easier time.
