Eminem to call it quits

Eminem to call it quits: US newspaper

Fri Jul 15, 6:38 PM ET

Rap star Eminem feels burned out by his success and will probably make his final concert appearance in Ireland on September 17, associates told a US newspaper.

The sources said his latest album "Encore" was also likely to be his last before Eminem starts a new career as a music producer, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported.

"Em has definitely gotten to the level where he feels like he's accomplished everything he can accomplish in rap," said rapper Proof, Eminem's stage partner said. "He wants to kick back and get into the producing thing."

"Why not bow out while you're on top?" said Proof.

Eminem, whose 2000 album "The Marshall Mathers LP" sold 9.8 million copies, has now made eight albums since 1999. He had three top 10 releases in 2002.

Many of his songs have been blasted for their explicit lyrics but the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, still has an international army of followers.

His current tour is scheduled to finish in Dublin on September and the Free Press quoted unnamed associates as saying it would be his last concert for the 33-year-old.

The report quoted the rapper's manager, Paul Rosenberg, as saying there was "no official decision" about the future. His Interscope Record company also declined to comment.

But Rosenberg acknowledged that changes were likely and that the latest record was "certainly the cap on this part of his career".

Other partners and rappers were quoted as saying that Eminem wanted to move away from performance to become a producer and what the newspaper called "star-maker."
Finally, someone who may be just smart enough to quit when he's ahead.

He'll probably continue to produce albums, and in 5 years he'll make a comeback.

The 15 minutes is almost up? Well, nobody ever thought "Mathers" was going to be as recognizeable 20 years down the road as Sinatra, Clapton or Ray ....

Would have been great if he could have appeared on 'The Sinatra Group' with Phil Hartman instead of Billy Idol, though .....

Good, he's produced enough odes to his own ego for 10 lifetimes.

I never understood what all the fuss was about. Then I read the lyrics to one of his "songs" and realized that either it's all about pale skinny white boys talking tough and praising themselves, or it's a parody of this phenomenon and his fans don't realize it.

Many of his songs amuse me for their lyrics. His ability to bitch and moan about anything is absolutely outstanding, and he used it to gain incredible success.

It's good to hear that he's backing out before he's putting out music just to put out music. I agree with Captain Chewie, he'll probably make a short comeback a few years from now, after he's had a chance to settle down a little.

He needs to get capped first. Then he can do a Tupac style comeback.

That being said, I don't mind some of his music.

Well to be fair he does refer to "bitches" and ""ho's" in his songs (though offhand I can't recall him using "cunt") usually in reference to his ex-wife but not always.

Anyways those of you that dismiss Eminem offhand as just like any other rapper without listening to his music are missing out. It's not for everyone obviously but some of his songs in particular have more meaning than most give him credit for.

Please explain what this "meaning" is, since I've read the lyrics for a few of his songs and the meaning never seems to add up to anything more than "life is hard for a white boy like me, and if you give me trouble I'll fuck you up."

Given a lot of his work with d12, he's very much satiring the "white boy rapper" thing, especially since going onto the mainstream and the charts.

Well, one of the good things about Eminem is that he does a really good job of explaining his feelings, thoughts and his story lyrically. As such, even though he can take it to the extreme, you can relate to the underlying feelings or at least understand where he's coming from most of the time. He's more genuine then most modern artists out their today (he actually writes his own songs!) and his songs, most of then anyway aren't just mindless fluff put together to please a certain demographic.

Do you know what's interesting about that response? It doesn't even attempt to answer my question. And yet you obviously think that it's an adequate answer, otherwise you would not have posted it.

Part of it would be the question of which songs you've gotten the lyrics to. He does have a very large repetoire of "life sucks I'll fuck you up if you fuck with me." However starting with Marhsall Mathers and really noticeable on the The Eminem Show you see a lot more social awareness in terms of problems plauging relations between politicians who want to "help" and the way things actually are on the streets of places like inner city detroit. The flip side to several other songs is the meaning you can only get by cunterweighting the pop style songs with the self debasing ones and just witnessing the dichotomy.

It ain't exactly Shakespear but its more than one dimensional "get me some bling and hos" gangsta rap.

Personally, i think his humor songs are some of the funnist shit ever. He lampoons everything, even other musicians and it's just hilarious. Listen to 'Real Slim Shady' it can be very funny, also the song about Triumph the Comic Dog being so idiotic, more recent, that was funny too.

Best lyric he makes fun of Michael Jackson, Pee Wee Herman and Ah-Nuld too along with Triumph, it's hilarious.

So anyway, for making me laugh on a consistant basis i'll miss him. I did grow tired of his singinga bout his kids though, that got old fast. Even though i did like that song 'Mocking Bird' it's still just mostly about his daughter and her mother-problems

That was a very intelligent, well-reasoned response. But because of the part I've bolded, I am bound by general principle and personal ethics not to take it seriously.

I wouldn't be suprised if he was. I'd say that Tupac and biggie are more recognizable than them and this is 10 years down the road.
