You should try Battle for Wesnoth. I'm not sure if I'd hold it up against some of the other games mentioned in this thread, but it's free, so if you don't like it all you've lost is the time it took to download it.

Totally forgot about that. Yeah, it was a damn cool game.

The X-Com and Jagged Alliance (don't underestimate JA1 either) series stay my favorites tough. Probably because you also had to maintain a base between the battles
Has anyone here played UFO Aftermath? I heard it was pretty poor....
While not the best, for me it was still good enough to finish it (probably because few games like that come out)
