It seems vaguely fitting that he passed away on the anniversary of the Moon Landing...

:(

Point of clarification on that article though: I don't think "Beam me up, Scotty" was ever actually said. The closest they ever came was "Scotty, beam me up" in ST4. Kind of a shallow, stupid thing to bring up on this occasion, but there it is anyway.

Wow. He certainly had quite the life.
Rest in peace Mr. Doohan, you will be missed.

According to Starbound, it's a problem solvable with enough combat drugs to turn you into the Incredible Hulk.

I read somewhere that he inspired many people to become engineers.

Good bye Doohan. You brought joy and inspiration to millions. Thats all I man could ask for.

Storming the beaches on D-Day
At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. “The sea was rough,” he recalled. “We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans.”
I had no Idea... He really was one tough old S.O.B. May he rest in peace.
He didn't seem that old, D-Day at 19... damnation.

*raises glass* To an army-man, and a hell of an engineer.

None of that synthetic stuff.

I just made a post in my blog about this and I'd thought I'd share:
Goodbye Scotty...
Today we lost a good man. James Doohan, better known as Scotty from Star Trek died today after 85 years of life. While its a great loss, in a way, you have to feel happy for him. He was suffering from a host of diseases, including Alzheimers, Parkinsons, kidney disease and lung fibrosis. According to the news articles I've read, he died at home of the Alzheimers and pneumonia, with his wife by his side.

Its of interest to note that he could be proud of the knowledge that he, as Scotty, inspired many people to become engineers themselves. This was acknowledged a few years ago, when a university in Minnesota award him an honorary degree in engineering.

I would wager than after Kirk and Spock, Scotty was probably the best known Star Trek character of the original series, possibly of the entire franchise.

This should not detract from Doohan himself. He was a brave individual who didn't let anything stop him. He fought in WWII and was not only hit by four machine gun bullets during the Normandy Invasion, but lost a finger. He carried on and stayed in the army, becoming a pilot and flying observation missions in support of the Canadian artillery units. He was once called "The craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force."

It seemed the only thing that could and would stop him were the terrible diseases he was afflicted with. This simply proved that he was mortal.

James Doohan will never be forgotten. Not as long as there are Trekkies. I'd like to imagine that he's somewhere, quietly working in engineering of his "girl", the Enterprise.

Rest in peace, Scotty.

He lost a finger? Did he have a prosthesis? I've never noticed Scotty to be missing a finger.
