The reason you never noticed his missing finger is due to a lot of clever camerawork and cunning positioning of his fingers and hands to always either keep that missing digit hidden, or not apparent.

Well this blows, when did all of the ST actors get so old? It seems like it kinda sunk up on us. Can you imagine what its going to be like when the captain himself dies...

Because he always tried to hide it from the camera. The guy who played Rader on M*A*S*H had a deformed left hand and he always managed to hide it.

To say that he will be missed by many would be a severe understatement. He will be missed by all who knew him, and all who know his character. May you rest in peace, James.

James Doohan the man was gone a while ago. The poor guy suffered from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. I'm sure he went peacefully.

Second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning. He'll always be a legend.

I'd had no idea he was suffering from Alzheimer's.

He lost the middle finger during the Second World War. Here's a story from The Times Online:
On June 6, 1944, Lieutenant Doohan of the Winnipeg Rifles, 13th Field Regiment, took part in D Company’s landing on Juno beach. The company disembarked from landing craft at 7.30am, and dashed through rifle and machinegun fire to reach the shelter of the sand dunes. Doohan silenced a German machinegun post with a few shots but was wounded later that day. He was hit eight times, four times in his left leg, and one round hit him in the chest — only the cigarette case in his breast pocket saved him from a mortal wound.

Otherwise, his company came off fairly lightly. The middle finger from his right hand had to be amputated, and whenever there were close-up shots of Scotty operating the transporter in Star Trek, a “stunt hand” was employed.

 He will be missed, but also remembered.
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

James Doohan is dead? Such things cannot be so. He was a great, great man, a terrific actor. One of my favourite things about Star Trek was Scotty. All that illness though was just terrible.

And at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember him.

khaaaaaaan!

An old favourite. He will live on in our hearts - and in our DVD collections - a real character with more screen presence in his little finger than some of the wet-lettuces we are stuck with today have in their whole bodies. God speed, Scotty, God speed.

I just saw it on the news. That's so sad.

Well, like others have said, at least he doesn't have to suffer. Both Alzheimer's and Parkison's diseases? Wow.

A great loss. While his career may not have been as big as other stars, his iconic character known the world over was loved and frequently referenced. At least he didn't have to endure the final blight Alzheimer's brings.

R.I.P. James Doohan.
