Recommend a Helicopter Sim

Post by Acidburns »

A friend and I have been playing BF2 a lot recently, and we've been having a blast with the choppers. Between my piloting and his TV missle skills we been racking up kills.

Anyone know of / have played any decent sims? I've never really seen any in the shops. Multiplayer would be a real bonus, as IL2 FB is great co-op online.

Oldie but a goldie, I've always loved Jane's Longbow 2. AH-64D Apache Longbow (duh), UH-60 Blackhawk, and OH-58D Kiowa Warrior are flyable.

Gunship 2000 and Gunship. Dated beyond belief, but I liked them a lot more then the newer ones for some reason.
I do know how to spell
AniThyng is merely the name I gave to what became my favourite Baldur's Gate II mage character :P

I CANNOT get LB2 to work under XP. I've tried everything with no success.

I enjoy the Razorworks Apache vs Havoc and Comanche vs Hokum series.

Cool, I'll check some of these out.

For those interested, theres a new heli sim coming out soon that looks like it has real potential. Called "Whirlwinds of Vietnam", being published by the Russian company 1C. I've heard they're getting help from 1C:Maddox, who made the excellent IL2 series. If it's up to even half that standard, it should be something. Theres some screenshots, and even though it's only 6 months in development, are looking pretty good.

Yeah, those games are great, especially when you've got both installed and can fly all four aircraft. Even with rampant use of the built in cheat (which rearms ,refuels and repairs your chopper instantly in flight) I haven't been able to even come close to destroying everything enemy in one of the full size battles. And that's ignoring the armored vehicles and aircraft that keep spawning and their main airports.

Though to game is more then slightly unrealistic in how effective the Longbow Hellfire and AT-16 missiles are in shooting down enemy aircraft. They just don't miss!

There were these old Sega Genesis helicopter sims I used to really love. Jungle Strike, Desert Strike, and I think one more I can't remember the name of. They're so old, but I had so much fun with them.

Urban Strike.

And then there was Nuclear Strike.

And more recently - Fair Strike.

They don't exactly qualify as sims, but any self-respecting helicopter gunship nut has played them. :D

In addition to the ones Ando posted, I think there was also Soviet Strike for the Playstation.

Don't forget the sequel, Nuclear Strike. Strike games are the bread and butter of your "SHOOT EVERYTHING" kind of game. They're like the Doom style FPS versus a Tom Clancy game.

Don't buy any Thunderstrike games. Singular Quarter made the mistake of falling for the poseurs.

Commanche 4. It rocks and if you can run BF2 at all then you can run it at maxed out settings with no lag. My cd has been gobbled up by a friend so I don't know how many people are still playing on novaworld though.
