THEY'RE SENDING HIS FRIGGING ASHES INTO FRIGGINg SPACE! YES!

here
Doohan's Ashes To Be Sent Into Space

POSTED: 8:39 am PDT July 20, 2005
UPDATED: 2:20 pm PDT July 20, 2005

James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

Doohan's ashes will be sent into space in accordance with his wishes, his agent said. The family has planned a private service.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, 'If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman."'

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teen-agers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

A company called Space Services Inc. will send the ashes into space. The Houston-based company teams with commercial launch organizations in offering memorial services. It also sent the ashes of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry and drug guru Timothy Leary into space.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has planned a tribute Wednesday afternoon. Representatives will place flowers on Doohan's Hollywood Walk of Fame star at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.

Does anyone besides me find it awesome that the finger he left behind on the battlefield was the middle finger of the right hand?

Lost his middle finger while being machinegunned at Normandy? The guys real life was dramatic enough without TV. And gettin' some action and having a kid at 80? Surviving an abusive asshole dad? Wow.. this guy was indestructable.

Scotty was my most favorite character of all ST. He will be missed.

 = For me missing him...

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

In regards to the space thing: that is fucking awesome. Wonder how much that costs, though.

This is indeed sad news, especially as I actually met the man. He, along with Nichelle Nichols, and George Takei appeared at GendoCon at Norfolk's Old Dominion University back in 1984, and spoke about the then upcoming Star Trek III. I remember when they began fielding questions from the audience, one goofball stood up and asked James Doohan why one of the engine room crew in Star Trek II had yelled "Auntie Em! Auntie Em!", in the scene where the ship was initially damaged in Khan's surprise attack. Doohan did his best to be polite, but you could see he thought the guy was an idiot, and he said he thought that what the character had actually said was "I need air!". He good naturedly berated Nichelle Nichols when called him James Doo-han, and he replied with mock irritation that she had known him almost twenty years, certainly long enough to know that his name was pronounced DOO-un.

Then afterward, the three actors went to sign autographs, and then hung around and chatted with some of the fans for a couple of minutes. I never got any autographs (I wish now that I had), but I shook Doohan's hand and spoke with him briefly, and told him how much I had always liked Star Trek, and enjoyed his portrayal of Scotty. It was the sort of thing he must have heard thousands of times before, but he didn't look at all as if he minded or was tired of hearing it. He was a very nice man. I'm sorry as hell that he's gone.

Somewhat relieved he didn't have to endure alzheimers too long. Still, a shame.

Knew he lost his finger on D-Day, though, but didn't know he'd been, well, THAT wounded. He was a tough one too.

Rest in peace Jimmy.

Keith Olberman interviewed George Takei last night and according to him, Doohan loved the fans, because he knew they loved him. He never got tired of going to the conventions and being around them. Hell, he would even go out for drinks with fans sometimes.

Takei told an amusing story back when TOS was still being made. He and Doohan were hanging out and he asked Takei where he wanted to go eat at and he suggested going to get sushi. Doohan couldn't even pronounce sushi and asked what it was and after finding out, he was like "Sure, lets go."

He loved sushi.

When he was shot by that machine gun, he was also nailed in the chest, but the bullet was stopped by a silver ciggerette case he was carrying.

RIP, Scotty.

I'm no ST fan(I turned off the great ST2 in disgust half-way through), but what I watched left me with little doubt as to why this guy has popularity. Spectacular charisma, spectacular performance.

RIP, Mr. Doohan.
