From the looks of the pictures I'd guess that the alien catgirls are coming out of UFOs.

I've always wondered this, but why do they make the eyes so big? Is there a reason, or is it just because?

Well, part of it is because these specific characters are chibi (super deformed), so that's occasionally how eyes are rendered.

For the general anime style, it's so the eyes can be more expressive, and is a progression from the early days of modern anime/manga style in the 1960s, which is pretty much all based on Osamu Tezuka's personal style started in the 1940s, which itself was influenced primarily by Disney. Character designing styles have branched out broadly since those beginnings.
