What's a good one that is available for a low price? Any recommendations?

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Last week I bought an Optorite DVD burner from Newegg. The thing cost less than 40 bucks. It seems to work fine.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

That friends is about the worst possible computer advise possible, akin to buying a car without looking at any of the features, driving it home and then recommending it to all your friends based on that.

To Joe, how much are you willing to spend? Do brand names matter to you? Do you prefer one type of burning software over the other(Nero or EasyCD?)
External/Interal
You can save money easily by buying last generation(IE slower) but don't buy so old that its a DVD+ or DVD- only.

Brand names are not important to me. I'm looking to spend less than $50, preferably less than $40. It's an old computer, one I'll probably be replacing within a year or two, so it doesn't need to be something able to last a long time.

I need one as well. Basically take everything he said above, add "And burns dual layer DVDs", and that's what I need.

The Burner you want
$40.99 and NEC while a big OEM supplier does have a good record.

You won't be likely to find a dual layer DVD+/-RW on the market for $50.00. The cheapest I've seen them is around $60 to $70, though expect to pay up to $100 for anything of decent quality.

Darn. I guess I'll just use my single layer and split DVDs across 2 discs til the price comes down. Not the end of the world!

No, not even close. He didn't write an essay detailing every little possible feature he would want. If it works fine and doesn't cost much money then what more is he asking for in that post?

Meh. So I don't do too much shopping for new burners. Last time I got prices on them was about 6 months ago. :P

And i bought the pieces for my current computer 5 months ago. I ended up buying exactly that burner, for not much more.

I bought and installed that very device from Newegg and I have been satisfied with its performance.
