Video Game Music Suggestions

Post by Solauren »

Hi all

I'm trying to build a library of video game music to play during Role-playing (pen and paper) sessions.

Suggestions for Video Game titles to check out?
(Completly legally, off course)

So far, the Metroid Franchise is on my list, and probably the Castlevanias and Final Fantasy series

FF6 has some of the best songs I've heard in all of videogaming. I'd recommend Dancing Mad specifically, during your PCs's epic fights.

EDIT: Oh, and btw, while ocremix is decent, I much prefer www.vgmix.com.

At OCR, there's some good stuff in the Wizards and Warriors section, IIRC.

If you can find a place that sells the Final Fantasy Tactics soundtrack, I would highly recommend it.

This is what you want.

I love that site. I have all the soundtracks on CD. The show before us on the radio at the moment told me about it, they even play the sound tracks on air.

Chrono Cross might just have the coolest opening theme ever. Aside from Chrono Trigger.

Check out this site:

More specificly the tracks under the "Modules by DRAX [Thomas Mogensen]" section. They were used in the game "Breakquest". They are some of the coolest songs I've heard in a video game and there are literaly hundreds to choose from!

You could use them legaly. He lets the company use them for the game and then when I asked he said we could use them and burn them on cds!

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I have 15 midi's from this game. I don't remember where I got them, but I can email them to you if you'd like. It's only a 42K zip file.

My favorite of them is the "Doom Castle Theme" :P
Second favorite is the boss battle tune.

The Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack probably has a few good tracks for your purposes.

Get a hold of The Black Mage's stuff, however you can. That's Nobuo Uematsu's rock band. The guy who wrote the best FF music. And they perform some of the classics. The Boss Battle Theme (FF6) done by an actual band rocks.

I second every suggestion made here.

I would also suggest The Good, The Bad and the Ugly main theme.
What is Project Zohar?

This was going to be my first suggestion. The MechWarrior games have some excellent, epic, deep music, completely and utterly devoid of lyrics so you can craft them to your game.

A close second has to be the soundtrack to Slave Zero, which was available for download in MP3 format from their website. Edgy, industrial techno stuff with some great attitude, and sounding good and synthetic the whole way through while still keeping the essence of guitar riffing intact. Acid without being messy.

And as a bonus, one of the tracks has a bit where this dude says, "You are calling up an old music file!"

Hehehehe. Score.

A few recommendations:

Killer Instinct - Killer Cuts. Bit tricky to get ahold of, but the soundtrack has some nicely done scores.

The Xenogears & Xenosaga soundtracks. Squaresoft always seems to have great music scores. As for more Square stuff, I'd also suggest the Einhander soundtrack.

Actraiser has some pretty decent stuff as well. And, er, that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Do you have any specific length requirements? As fun as music might be, it might get taken the wrong way if a track loops around several times (as a guy who mucked around with music during games, I learned this quite harshly from my peers).

For some really good end-of-campaign battle tracks, I'd reccomend 3-07 and 3-14 (Four Noble Devils I and II) from the Romancing SaGa III soundtrack, and 3-16 (don't know this one's title) if you decide to screw the group over with a fight they can't win like my current GM just did. The tracks of Ys V are good for some deep ambiance, and you can't go wrong with Adagio from the original Homeworld. Treasure of the Rudras has a few decent tracks as well, along with Live-A-Live.

Question to the mods: is proliferation of media from a copyrighted game that is ripped from the actual game data through emulation as opposed to copying the tracks from the CD in violation of the codes of conduct regarding such materials? 'cause if not, I've got more or less the one-stop shop to pick up a royal shitload of game music.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.
