Fundies, the afterlife and me
Ok, I don't believe in heaven or hell (altough some people deserve eternal pain), think the bible (and other religious books for that matter) is mostly a collection of fairytales and I never go to church (yeah, like that is going ot happen on a sunday morning)
I do however live a morally good life, don't do crime, treat people the same way I like to be treated myself (isnt this what christianity originally was all about?) and use my turnsignals when leaving a roundabout. You know, the average Nice Guy.
So, in the eyes of your typical fundie, am I going to heaven or hell?
If it's hell (probably), how well would I burn on a scale from 0 - 100 with 0 a moderate christian and Hitler being 100?

To the average fundamentalist, salvation only comes through accepting Jesus as your Savior. (As they reject the concept that one can get into heaven through good works, since this would invalidate the whole Jesus Saves thing. If one could get into heaven on good works alone, then virtuous non-believers could get in, and we don't want that now, do we?) So, thusly, from the fundamentalist point of view, you're going straight to Hell when you die.wautd wrote:Ok, I don't believe in heaven or hell (altough some people deserve eternal pain), think the bible (and other religious books for that matter) is mostly a collection of fairytales and I never go to church (yeah, like that is going ot happen on a sunday morning)

And fundamentalists don't have nearly as inventive a hell as Dante did. You just get thrown onto the lake of fire to suffer eternal torment. Thus, all sinners burn on a scale of 100.

The people I know: "Um...I'm sorry to hear that. I'm really sorry, but...there's really no way around it. I'm really, really sorry, but...uh...it's hell... *shrug*. But really, if you don't want to, here's a Bible, if you have any questions about Jesus, call me."wautd wrote:So, in the eyes of your typical fundie, am I going to heaven or hell?

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Matthew 26:24 - The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born
Luke 17:2 - It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.
There may be different levels of suffering.
Your average Fundy is going to state your going straight to hell. Your more moderate Christian (which does represent the majority of Christians) is going to say you get judged by your actions.

And the moderate Christian will laugh and shrug it off calling the Fundy an idiot.
Its rather amusing to watch Christian infighting.

The quality of which you burn is as it would be for all heretics. Anyone who doesn't agree with the fundie is instantly an immoral, godless heathen.wautd wrote:If it's hell (probably), how well would I burn on a scale from 0 - 100 with 0 a moderate christian and Hitler being 100?

My mother in law says that we all go to hell and stay for an inderterminate period of time before being elevated to heaven, the amount of time spent in hell being directly proportional to how evil you were in life. And only 144,000 people get into heaven directly.
She's a reletively moderate RC so take all this with a grain of salt, or perhaps several grains.

Ask her why Jesus had to stay in hell for three days then. I would think that a perfect guy would get a straight pass. (It's in Acts, but I would have to look it up to find the exact scripture.)Cpl Kendall wrote:My mother in law says that we all go to hell and stay for an inderterminate period of time before being elevated to heaven, the amount of time spent in hell being directly proportional to how evil you were in life. I'd rather not actually, I steer away from religious discussion with her out of respect for my wife. She doesn't want to have to deal with the fall out from it and I don't blame her.DrkHelmet wrote:

144,000 people? According to the most hard-core fundamentalist versions of Christianity you can't get to Heaven without being Christian, so you're definitely going to hell.
If it makes you feel any better good non-Christians (i.e. the majority of the human race) go to Limbo, which is the first circle of Hell. Limbo is described as a depressing place but not a horrific one (like the lower levels). It's a tranquil place and there's no torture or anything like that, so it doesn't sound too bad to me.

Actually, that's Dantean Hell, which I believe does not survive in any major form of Christianity today. All nonbelievers/bad people (depending upon your take of Christianity) go to a universally torturous Hell.Junghalli wrote: If it makes you feel any better good non-Christians (i.e. the majority of the human race) go to Limbo, which is the first circle of Hell. You get out of purgatory. You don't get out of hell, IIR Catholic dogma correctly.Cpl Kendall wrote:Whats the difference?Surlethe wrote:

Hell. You don't accept Jesus. That is absolutely REQUIRED in Fundydom for entrance to heaven. That and intperpreting the Bible the exact same way they do.wautd wrote:So, in the eyes of your typical fundie, am I going to heaven or hell?
For most fundies, there isn't a hell-o-meter. Its one or the other. No gradations. If it's hell (probably), how well would I burn on a scale from 0 - 100 with 0 a moderate christian and Hitler being 100?

You forgot the 7 levels of hell! I think it's one of the Pentacostal faiths, but I'm not absolutely sure. First level if a decent place, but don't go to level 7 or you are screwed.Darth Servo wrote: For most fundies, there isn't a hell-o-meter. Its one or the other. No gradations.

No I was referring to something completely different a campus fundy told me. It was his explanation for how Jesus went to hell for 3 days. He was on level 1 which is a really peachy place to stay.Surlethe wrote: Are you referring to Dante's 9 rings, which, as has been noted above, he made up?
