A friend suggested this instead of AIM... anyone tried it?

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

I use it. Aside from not being able to transfer files for some reason (maybe that was just me, but when I booted up AIM it worked), it works pretty well. You might have to play with some of the included functions to get some of what AIM offers though (like not cluttering up your taskbar when it's running), and I don't think it'll do that handfy pop-up notification thing like AIM did.

Does GAIM do YIM as well?

Not that I'd use YIM on a widescale basis, but I am interested to see if a friend of mine really uses it, and only one way to find out...

Indeed it does. You now appear on my buddy list twice thanks to this. Congrats. :D

EDIT: Silly typo. Trix are for kids!

according to wikipedia gaim handles :

* AOL Instant Messenger (via OSCAR or TOC protocols)
* Gadu-Gadu
* ICQ (via OSCAR)
* Internet Relay Chat
* Jabber (XMPP)
* MSN Messenger
* Novell Groupwise
* OpenNAP
* Yahoo! Messenger
* Zephyr
* SILC

I am switched to gaim recently since trillian has been having trouble connecting to msn messenger lately. I've only used it a few days, but I'm not planning to switch back, especially since gaim is a multi-platform client

I use it on my Linux machine. The tabbed message windows are a lovely idea. Especially for me, since during the infrequent times I us AIM of GAIM, I get hammered with about half a dozen chat windows all at once.

I use it and like it. I use it for AIM, MSN, YIM, and ICQ. (You don't have to break the link to that site, by the way.)

You can get the Guifications plugin. Also, you can check out the plugins page for other handy plugins.
