"The error in our knowledge of where NT7 will be on 1 February, 2019, is large, several tens of millions of kilometres," he said.
In astronomy, the error is in the exponent. Basically, the calculation showed up as "Earth plus or minus 10 million kilometers."

With this much lead time, we already have the technology to divert this asteroid if necessary. Some very high-yield nukes using stand-off detonations will boil off plasma from the facing side, thus creating a propulsive effect (the ablation acts like a rocket). You can "push" an asteroid in this manner, and a lot of high-yield nukes long in advance would knock this asteroid off-course.

The real trick is to figure out whether it is, in fact, going to hit us. It would be a real kick in the balls to change its course with a stand-off detonation and then figure out that it wasn't going to hit us anyway (or worse yet, that we just diverted it into a collision course).

That being said, we need a way to get these weapons into high orbit. We don't have any platforms that can carry a decent sized warhead and propulsion/guidance up there. I suppose we could try a multiple-stage plan, lifting them initially with the Space Shuttle, then lifting up fuel pods, then attaching both to the Shuttle to go high enough.

Dangit, I'll never see my grandma live to be 109! Well, we have plenty of time to prepare, and most people still have unused shelters from the Y2K scare, and we have the technology, so what's to worry besides a giant rock hitting the planet and us all?

Maybe you could boost the largest things into orbit with the remaining Energia rockets (if any are left), a bunch of Titan 4Bs and Protons, but that's iffy. Then use the Orbiter for assembly.

Asteroid Impact

Post by John »

It is my impression that neutron flux is the main source of heat for the vaporization effects that might divert an asteroid. If that is true, would a high yield bomb be necessary? Or am I way off base here?

I know exactly what we can do to make the mean old asteroid go away!
First, we get a microwave, then we put balls of tin foil in the microwave!
This will create a phased micron burst that will activeate a subspace field to lower the mass of the asteroid, so we can move it at warp speed. Then after we do that, we can use a modified tachyon pulse to do something else to the asteroid, then, finally, we use a phase inhibitor wrench to beat the asteroid up, and inhibit it's phase. After all this is done, we can use a quantum ion phase accelerator to blow up the asteroid by phasing its metreon flux, causing it to convert suddenly to neutrons on the quantum level. This is all accomplished by putting balls of tin foil into a microwave.
Woo! Cant you tell i'm bored?

I hope it lands on the godless Chinese, to show them that Jesus is on our side.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! This is Blasphemy!

A true believer would never say such a thing.

And even if it lands on the Chinese, the rest of the world is probably screwed as well. Including YOU. 8)

No, Jesus will protect the faithful from the ice age created by the ashes of the incinerated heathens.
