Trekkies that are also fundies.
I thought people might be interested in this. It is both about sci fi and creationism.
Basically some one is claming that it is stupid that startrek (which they say is scientifically sound) is using the “baseless, unproven scientific theory” of evolution.
Its over at startrek.com hear is the link.

This is nothing surprising. Given the fact that many trektards show they can't grasp logic, fundie belief in magic sky pixies as well is nothing new. iirc a few such trolls have gotten banned from here before as well.

Star Trek writers have no idea how evolution works. This much is obvious from Genesis (entire crew "de-evolves") and Threshold (Janeway and Paris turn into giant lizards) alone.

The guy calling himself "Lord Edam" on my Hate Mail page is a creationist. I've found it's actually surprisingly common for Trekkies to be fundies. Not that I'm suggesting there's any connection, since I'm sure there are lots of fundie Star Wars fans, Stargate fans, etc. But it does seem to indicate that fundies have no problem being Star Trek fans, despite the show's overblown pretensions of being geared toward science enthusiasts.

When I was much younger (12-16), I was big into Star Trek IRC simming. Think of the biggest, most outrageous Trek wank you can think of, throw in some huge character shields, add a liberal dosage of pre-pubescent angst and egomania from nearly everyone, and you have the environment in which I dwelled. The questionability of a bunch of adults leading sims for minors aside, I look back and I notice that the place definitely had several rather hardcore fundies. I remember one of them trying to convert me, and I wish I still had that chat log. It'd be a gem to look at now, seven years later.
Also, I suspect that fundies wouldn't be as drawn to Star Wars (for roleplaying, that is) as often only because Trek supposedly inherits Earth's history, so it's easier for them to envision themselves as Christians of the Future™. Although, I guess if they jumped through enough hoops and rationalizations, they could imagine some sort of Christian church in the Wars universe.

Someone in that topic linked to answeresingenesis. I have never encountered that particular creationist site before. They seem to be very condescending in their little writings, almost as if they are targeting children. Do creationists always try to sound this "folksy." It's really annoying, the condescending part. The stupidity part is a different kind of annoying.

You don't understand. They're not trying to be condescending with those ridiculous folksy descriptions and grossly oversimplified analogies. That reminds me of a Star Trek joke which I first heard used to denigrate Arabs, but it can be used to mock other groups as well.Alferd Packer wrote:

Why are there no Christians on Star Trek?
Because its set in the future.

That's the problem: Star Trek supports an absurd caricature of evolution. In that episode, they used computer modeling to "predict" the bipedal highly intelligent inevitable end-point of dinosaur evolution: a gross mischaracterization of evolution theory if I ever saw one.mr friendly guy wrote:The Voth were dinosaurs which evolved, developed space flight and ended up in the Delta quadrant.Stofsk wrote:Star Trek doesn't subscribe to evolution anyway. I think a lot of it stems from the way the Federation is always portrayed as being Absolutely Right and Perfect, even when an objective analysis of their actions would indicate otherwise. It seems to be a mentality that fundies can readily identify with.

I've found the Fundy/Creationist Trekkie connection an odd one considering how much Roddenberry detested religion and TOS and TNG episodes lambasting religion.

I find your attempts to remember Voyager episodes quite distressing. Maybe you should consider counciling before injuring yourselves in such a manner?

Yes, yes it is. That is the reason why many creationists think sites like TalkOrigins.org are false; because they are using words that they don't understand. As for religious themed episodes, don't forget season 6's Barge of The Dead. The basic plot was that B'Elanna has a near death experience, then sees the boat to Hades, I mean Gre'Thor.
She sees her mother is on the boat because B'Elanna rejected Klingon ways. This meant that she'd failed as a mother, blah blah blah. After some angst, she offers to take her mother's place in Gre'thor for eternity.

There was another episode (Rise IIRC) where Nelix and Tuvok are going through an attempted tribute to the old Spock vs McCoy debates where Nelix is arguing in favor of gut reactions and is proven right.Gandalf wrote:Sacred Ground, season 3.
