Debate with a Rabid Trekki on another board

Post by Xess »

This is my first real debate with a rabid trekkie. I don't think I'm doing spectacularly but I do think I'm holding my own.

++http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php ... e=13&pp=15

I'm Xessmithia, he's Xhadam, his first post is #187. He's using arguments that the small explosions in the Battle of Coruscant are upper limits of SW firepower, that the asteroids in AOTC and ESB were fragmented and not vapourized, that a BDZ doesn't melt the surface of a planet and that the bombardment in TDiC is comparable.

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Show screenshots of the astroids, tell him to find fragments, also, show him single shots from the DS2 making explosions(upper limit my ass). Explain that the AOTC example still outclasses anything in Trek.
Useless geek posting above.

I haven't done the DS2 bit, but I have shown him screen shots of the AOTC and ESB asteroids. He still says they're fragmented because "Glowing debris is not evidence of vaporization, the fact it is clustered at all tends towards fragmentation rather than vaporization."

Even though there are obviously no fragments. He even goes so far as to say that because the asteroid collision in ESB has a brighter explosion that the smaller asteroids must have been fragmented, even though ILM didn't put fragments in.

..... Tell him to SHOW YOU fragments, very simple, loud and clear. No "assumption, trends, tends", highlight the fragments.

AH! Why would you discuss anything past 3 pages on Nationstates' general forum? After that it gets kinda useless as you get stuck with fananatics.

And he called you a "a pet of Wong." He knows too much...

I used to think that it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe. ~Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were and ask "why not?" ~John F Kennedy Jr, 1963

Haha. I've got one that seems to think Voyager's replicators can make something out of nothing. He seems to think that replicators turn pure energy into matter. He says that Voyager's replication of armour is infinate because it's replicated. He doesn't seem to realize that for Voyager to replicate the armour over it's hull, it'd need to carry more raw material then the ship was capable of carrying.

So don't feel bad.

You could just show him Dadonna calcs and make him beg to go back to ESB Asteroid destruction calcs.

He has yet to respond to my latest post, I may have scared him off but I don't have my hopes up. As for your Trekkie, the wall of ignorance is stong with that one.

Speed of the glow disappearing proves vaporization. P=A*boltzmen constant *T^4. The energy to fragment the asteroids is such that solid chunks would be glowing for far longer given the temperature differential.

I made a point similar to that by showing that surface area of a vapourized asteroid is much larger and would radiate its heat away quickly because of it.

He still hasn't responded.

Just to mention, SW generally holds out in the end, at least in the NS debates I've participated in. It's only rarely you run into a complete fool who will basically ignore everything you say (in which case it turns froma debate into entertainment :D )

I'm on that board, too. My favorite is the dozen people who come in and tell you how certain things are "plot devices" and it somehow changes the argument.

Or how on every page there is a post something like:

i haven't read the thread because its too much, but trek ships are immune to lasers, so wars is too week two win

At least they gave up on miraculous transporters after page 3.
