Help People Find New Music
So I need some new music now. Gotta find new bands. Can't afford a subscription to Rolling Stone. Don't have the time to scour the Internet. Everything on MTV is more or less shit. So. It's time for you to help me. You will do this out of the goodness and purity of your heart, because I am so awesome that you would gladly go out of your way to help me, and because no one can resist sharing the stuff they like with others.
With luck, this thread will grow beyond being exclusively about me and open up into a general recommendation thread, but that is secondary to the primary purpose of helping me.
So first, let me tell you what I like. I like rock, and I like jazz, and I like blues. There's some rap that I like but only a handful of songs. Generally I like my rock to be pretty fast-paced. There are few blanket exclusions, but among them are bands that chiefly make songs with weepy lyrics or spend all their song time bitching about how much their lives suck.
A sampling of artists I like:
-The Rolling Stones
-AC/DC
-Tom Petty
-Jimi Hendrix
-Muddy Waters
-Tenacious D
-Rock & Roll Soldiers
-The Doors
-Cream
-Robert Johnson
-B.B. King
-The Moldy Peaches
-The Modern Jazz Quartet
-Queen
-Warren Zevon
-Jim's Big Ego
-The White Stripes
-Led Zeppelin
-The Beatles
-Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne
And my all time favorite song is "I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After.
So fire away.

I'm going to be completely unhelpful to this poor soul who needs the kind of music I don't generally listen to (hence can't help him with) and post my own list of what I like with the given understanding I'd like more like it.
Alice Cooper
Marylin Manson
The Cruxshadows
Voltaire
E Nomine
Enigma
Conjure One
Cirque de Soliel
Lâme Immortelle
After Forever
Theatre of Tragedy
Nightwish
Rammstein
Lacrimosa
Notre Dame de Paris (anything else like this anywhere?? ANYWHERE??)
Dark Sanctuary
Edguy
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Within Temptation
Xandria
Black Tape for a Blue Girl
Era
Malice Mizer
to all!

"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

I will throw in my obligatory recommendation of Deep Purple. They're early-70s hard rock, and they go in nicely with some of the ones you listed. Their best/most iconic stuff is mostly on the famous Machine Head album, if you can track that down it should be pretty indicative of their style and whether or not you'll like them.

You must become one with the classic rock:
Boston
Kansas
Van Halen
ZZ Top
Pink Floyd
Blue Oyster Cult
The Doobie Brothers
The Allman Brothers
Lynrd Skynrd
The Eagles
Guns 'n' Roses
Foghat
Eric Clapton
Deep Purple
Some of these bands made a few really good hits and some are just solid all of the time.

Oh, yeah, The Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, and van Halen are all great. I'm actually looking for newer stuff...I have an extensive library of oldies but I'd like to pick up a few new albums.

Along the lines of Dropkick Murphys, get some Flogging Molly. They're usually classified as punk, but I'd say they're more rock. Definitely have a nice Irish flare to them.
Here's a few I would recommend:
White Zombie
Rage Against the Machine
Muse
Mars Volta
Cake
Alice in Chains
Tool - Amazing band, but I've found that you either love them or absolutely hate them. One of those bands you really have to get into, sit down and experience a whole album all at once.
Mindless Self Indulgence - Crazy band, not sure if you'd like them, but I have to mention them anyway.

Tori Amos. You really need some Tori in your music, and Zaia will agree with me on that. I'd suggest Scarlet's Walk, From the Choirgirl Hotel, and Under the Pink for starters, then explore the rest of the collection. Your friends will think you're gay or something, but the chicks will love you.HemlockGrey wrote:Oh, yeah, The Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, and van Halen are all great. Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

To add to the thread, the new finch album is suprisingly awesome considering i could have put the last album onto a bonfire and never though twice about it.

Since most of what I listen to is already mentioned, I figure I'd throw in the few that weren't.
Rob Zombie is an obvious given
Orgy - bit of a one-note band, but their Candyass album has a few decent tunes on it.
The Scorpions - old school 80s hair metal.
VnV Nation - Bit more on the techno/trance side than metal, but definitely worth checking out.
Paul Oakenfold - Trance music, but still highly recommended.

You might want to try Brendan Benson, he and Jack White are working together on a new album sooner or later as well (can't wait). He's generally a bit more chilled out than Jack and Meg, but still rather funky.
Check out TREKWARS (not involving furries!)

Absolutely. If you don't normally go for alternative piano chick rock, try the song "God" out (off the album "Under the Pink") for starters.aerianna wrote:Tori Amos. See? Tori Amos is Zaia approved, I mean how much better of an endorsement can you have than that?Zaia wrote:Absolutely. Ok, so maybe you're not ready for Tori Amos, it's understandable, she can be a bit much for some people.
In which case I'd suggest The Tea Party. Sort of a blend between Led Zeppelin and The Doors, with their own unique sound. Start with either "Edges of Twilight" or "Triptych".
