MMORTS?

Post by Surlethe »

Is there a good massively multiplayer online real time strategy game? Furthermore, if I have an idea, is there any way I can market it to game developers?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Time of Defiance is alright, I just didn't like the visual style or lack of a meaningful story. Otherwise....not really.

I dunno about developers, but I'm sure with enough cocaine you could convince some publisher to get a developer working on that.

Come to think of it you could probably convince a lot of people to do a lot of things with that technique.

Hmm.

You're going to have a hard time trying to freelance pitch a design to a big-time developer; they don't even like to look at design overviews or samples from docs as examples in resumes. It has to do with copyright and potential claims of infringement, but what it means is you pretty much have to be working for the company itself or have your own developer group pitch it to a producer/distributor.

Only game I recall that was clearly an MMORTS was Soverign, and that project was shelved ages ago.

And sucked last time I played it. Unit pathfinding was horrible, as was the design of several models, and most players are 12yr old pricks who go off with their lightsaber-swinging ninja-bots to die horribly and leave your artillery units to the mercy of some cloaking super-bike :banghead:
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

I remember reading about Sovereign back in 1999 as one of the most anticipated games of 2000 in a PC Gamer mag. I had always wondered if that game was finished or not. When did they decide to shelve the idea?

Oh it was shelved a long time ago. Well before Planetside came out. I seem to recall that the two were announced at the same time, but only one made it.
I seem to recall a MMORTS based in some sort of crazy steampunk envinornment. There were islands and ships that ran on steam and water and stuff. I recall playing a several day trial of it, it wasn't all that great. I have no idea what the name was, maybe it was mentioned already? My memory is sorta shady on the details. I remember portals where some sort of crazy faction sold stuff for water, or something. I'm really not sure. I think it existed... really!

Meh. And the game idea looks so good on paper. I proposed implementing a command structure, different guilds, mercenaries, a full-blown economy, full AI backup...

Well, I can dream.

Time of Defiance, as I said. It's alright, but I didn't like the aesthetics or nearly absent/irrelevant storyline.
