Stargate SG-1: The Alliance on hold/scrapped

Post by Xon »

linky(on gateworld so watchout for spoilers!)
In a surprise move, Austrian video game publisher JoWooD Productions Software AG announced today that they have put the brakes on Stargate SG-1: The Alliance and terminated the company's relationship with developer Perception PTY Ltd. The company believes that the game as it is being developed will not meet the quality expectations of fans.

"The title in its current form, initially scheduled for an October 2005 release, does satisfy neither our quality requirements nor the fans expectations," JoWood CEO Albert Seidl said in a press release. "We will not release anything that does not do justice to this well known license. In recent months we have invested a lot of time and resources in helping Perception finish the development, but we now simply have lost confidence in their ability to finish this project in time and sufficient quality."

Following the termination JoWooD has asked for repayment of their investment in development and further expenses.

Stargate SG-1: The Alliance was to be released this fall for the PlayStation 2, XBox, and PC, and co-published in North America by Namco with a whopping $2 million marketing budget (story). JoWood hopes that the game may yet have life with a different developer.

The company claims that, according to its contract, it retains the rights to the title, and the company will seek a transfer of the game's source code and assets from Perception. "After delivery of the code and assets JoWooD will review the possibility of seeking out developers if it is economically viable to finish the title," said Michael Paeck, Executive Producer for JoWooD.

A legal battle may be on the horizon, leaving the future of the game's development -- if there is one -- uncertain. But the title certainly won't be hitting the shelves this year.

"We are not prepared to release anything but a top quality title," Paeck said. "Fans of the show as well as gamers would not accept anything less. There are several options to consider, among them potentially moving to next-gen consoles for the title."

The current generation of gaming consoles is nearing the end of its life-cycle, with the next generation XBox 360 due out before Christmas. The PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution will follow next spring.

GateWorld is attempting to reach Perception for comment. More on the story as it develops.
I bet they were taking too many liberties(the official forums werent that great either) with the stargate universe and the higher ups got fedup with it.

Either that or they thought it was a waste of money and cancelled it.

I find this to be very good news. I have a suspicion that the producers of Stargate are involved in this and had some call on the quality of the game.

Ideal news would be the game was going perfectly. Bad news would be total cancelation. This is the game being canceled for quality issues with a desire to still make it. Considering what I saw from the E3 trailer, this works good enough.

From what some of the moderators on the official game forums leaked about the "gameplay balancing" of various things in Stargate, I'm rather happy about this.

If the Zat doesnt killing in 2 hits & vaporising in 3, I'm not interested in the damn game.

And taking 20-30 rounds from a P90 to kill a Jaffa isn't much fun either.

Fifty round clip, p90s are famous for those. But thats besides the point... twenty rounds WTF?

Seriously my old gripe with some otherwise great games in the past(Half Life/Doom 3 I'm looking at you!) has either been how inaccurate the weaponry was or how pisspor the damage was. Sure its fun to shot bad guys seven times with the smg but only twice with the pistol that both use the same ammo

While I'm glad a lame branded game has been cancelled, SG1 fans get no sympathy from me. Everyone's had to live with SW games with '10+ hits to kill' and 'constant reloading' because of FPS standards, and noone ever gave a shit.

20 rounds is a serious non-trivial chuck of the clip to take down a single target. A normal sized squad of about 5-10 Jaffa would be simply require too much ammo to kill with a p90 like that.

30 rounds is worse, thats 1 kill per clip!

Yes, instead of the recoil walking the weapon up and away from the target you just have it randomly miss.

These arent World War 2 sub-machine guns with +90% inaccuracy rate.

Nitpick, I had(Lost during Hurricane Ivan) an mp40 which I can plant a excellent grouping all the way out to eighty meters.

But then your avarage FPS engagement rages are between one to thirty meters, any longer than that and tradtionaly you have a sniper rifle handy :P

If only LucasArts had made this decision when they saw SOE's work in Galaxies.

World War 1 stuff? 1st production run stuff? :D (for video game SMG accuracy?)

Yes, using a "sniper rifle" for stuff more than 30 metres away is rather stupid. If it is more than 100m you probably cant see the damn thing :P

Did you just switch wars on me? And If I remeber correctly it was produced in 42 and seized in France in 44 and escaped destruction because it got taken home by a relative of mine and taken care for since then

The "Sniper Rifle" are rarley anything more than Railguns with 10x scoupes, while every other gun in the game is 30% inaccurate no matter how long you sit still and aim, most rifles are 100% accurate even if bunny hopping like a madman.

Doom3 weapons were reasonably accurate. The AR in Doom3 was infact very accurate.
