Questionable morality in Harry Potter?
I just thought of something.
In HP, use of the Imperius curse is considerd unforgivable, because it takes away the free will of the target. But love potions are aperantly leagal.

I always thought love spells and potions were sinister in stories, though rarely are they thought about or used with that kind of mentality in the sotries I've read. Actually, half the time they prove "unncessary! *prancing ponies and sparkles*" but nevertheless...
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

1) There is a limit to how love potions work, both in time and in what it makes the person doNeocron wrote:I just thought of something.

2) it influences free will, but doesn't eliminate it. Ron still chopse to punch Harry, Rhomilda didn't make him do it
3) Love potions are readibly curable (Slughorn made the antidote in minutes) whereas the Imperius curse can only be beaten with extreme difficulty by a few people

Probably because the curse is a direct application of magic, and therefore requires a strong countercurse, and can't be given inadvertently, whereas a love potion is both weak, can be taken inadvertently, and an antidote is readily available.Neocron wrote:I just thought of something.

I'd imagine love potions occupy a sort of grey area in the law.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
F. Douglass
If you want questionable morality in HP you should have used the Imperius Curse and the Memory Charm.
One is unforgiveable, the other I have no idea.

Lockhart comitted it on magical people (he was quite good at it too), and Barty Crouch Snr did it on Bertha Jenkins.Dakarne wrote:Hmm... The Memory Curse is sort of like the Ministry of Magic's Version of the Neuralizer... it's to stop muggles finding out about magic.
My point being that it can and has been used by the wizarding community on there own, and it should be right up there with the Imperius Curse if you ask me, you effectively 'steal' a part (or a whole) of someone's identity from them. But as it is, it appears that it doesn't earn you time in Azkabam (even for a few months).

Well, you can just give him\her another potion. It might not be as powerfull as the imperius curse, but it can be used to force people to marry you, or have sex with you.( Merope/Tom Riddle)Ender wrote:1) There is a limit to how love potions work, both in time and in what it makes the person doNeocron wrote:I just thought of something.
