Which better at evoking emotion?

Post by Shinova »

Which form is better at conveying emotions to the audience, and evoking emotions from the audience? Good live-action or good anime?

Examples:

Moulin Rouge - live-action
Grave of the Fireflies - Anime

Ouch. That is one toughie question. As far as happiness and anger, live-action does a more than decent job, but fear is a lot easier to portray in anime.

Most definitely live-action. Anime cannot compare to the skills of a professional actor. In terms of humour they tie, but anime has the upper hand. For emotions, I'm with human beings.

Grave of the Fireflies had me crying like a sissy bitch. It was just damn good. Wings of Honneanimise (sp?) was amazing and inspiring and does bring a tear to the eye in the end.

But then you have movies like Moulin Rouge, American Beauty, Forrest Gump and others that ellicit emotion.

It takes a great movie in either to bring emotion to the fore, but when it is done properly...

Argh... Everyone seems to be making sense but me... But I think weema dando's right... medium is not as important as content...

Both can. But, live action is a bit easier since you can identify more with the characters. Though it mainly depends on the content.

You can identify more easily with people in live-action movies better than characters in anime? You're... weird.

Live action

Moulon Rouge was the worst movie I've ever seen.

Live action.

It's good, you should check it out. Its on Midnight Saturdays on Cartoon Network (EST).

No, I've not seen GotF, but I'll try and find it.

Another emotional one is "Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket" God, but that's a sad story, and very heavy on the psychological effects of war. EXTREMELY well done.

Question: We are all here talking about movies that made us cry, but what about other emotions? Happiness? Anger? Fear?

When done well...either.

Evoking emotions is a matter of conveing it through sight and sound with progression.

I have seen it done superb in both and hell even without sight and sound...progression and words alone can evoke emotion as I've have happy, sad, tension and fear from books more often then some anime or movies.

All. However, the most emotionally powerful movies are usually the ones that move us to tears. Those stay with us the longest.

As for Cowboy Bebop...I sorta felt good with the ending...it ended like it should have...personally I expected nothing less.

Though Grave is much more a heart tugger than even War in the pocket or CB were.

True, but no one aside form myself has even *touched* these. I realize that sadness is the most moving emotion, but I wonder how many of us are a bit more empathic to other emotions.

The various Gundam series are great at evoking emotion for me. I get pissed off at the jerks (Lt. Mancha from 0083 for example) I feel compassion for someone who's lost a loved one (like Al from 0080), I feel sad or angry when a good character dies (Ranba Ral from the original), and I actually jump up and cheer when a big battle is won.

The best anime series to move me in different ways will have to be Gundam X ... for some reason I can get quite emotional watching that series...

Edit: I forgot about this..

There is an old french series named : Les Mondes Engloutis (Shagma )
that is my all time favorite actually.. It can stir up quite abit of emotions
