Why stop at the American people? Presidental foriegn lies are often worse, especially in the 20th Century. Often leaving countries and lives in the balance.Ted wrote:Name me one president who HASN'T lied to the american people?
They're all politicians, politicians lie through their teeth. Heck, even Jedi know that! (mentioned by Obi-Wan in AotC)

Historical context: Lincoln's idea to colonise the blacks to Liberia or Sierra Leone was one he advocated before his election to the presidency in 1860. He still would float the idea occasionally in the early months of the Civil War, and was publicly attacked for its foolishness by abolitionist Wendell Phillips, who blasted the idea outright when he said, "Colonise the blacks?! You might as well colonise your own hand, or when the robber is in your house you may as well colonise your gun". By the middle of 1862, however, Lincoln knew that emancipation would provide the Union with both manpower and the moral high-ground in the conflict (the latter to stave off European diplomatic intervention).Shinova wrote:Did you guys know that Abe was originally planning to deport all the Blacks back to Africa or something?
Things could've been a lot different if Lincoln hadn't been assasinated.
When Lincoln faced opposition over enlisting black soldiers, his reply in late 1863 was "You say you won't fight for negros. Some of them seem willing to fight for you".
By the beginning of 1865, Lincoln was foresquare behind the idea of black citizenship.
As for things being different if Lincoln had not been assassinated, the Reconstruction might have gone much more smoothly and left fewer political and cultural wounds if he had lived to oversee it. Andrew Johnson and the Radical Republicans in Congress made quite a mess of it.

Yes of course, Rad. A lie about getting a blowjob from the office girl is a far more serious and mortal threat to the Republic than lies about the current administration's actual position on privacy and internet freedom, or lies about selling missiles to terrorists in secret, or lies about a certain presidential family's involvement with a certain Saudi family of which a certain terrorist is a scion.Rhadamanthus wrote:Bah, we all know Democrats are absolute paragons of truth ....

I'll give you three guesses, but you should only need 1.
