Dumb Or Overly Forced Astronomical Acronyms (DOOFAS)

Post by kheegster »

I was at a coffee meeting at the observatory this morning when the director started talking about some major instrumentation projects involving the Gemini telescope programme...the discussion started revolving around two new projects in the pipeline: High Resolution Near-Infra-Red Sectrograph (HRNIRS, pronounced 'hernia') and another instrument called PERVS which I didn't catch the full name of.

So I googled for some dumb-ass astronomical names and came up with this gem:

My favourites are bolded....

WIMP = "weakly interacting massive particle".

These are one candidate for the "dark matter" that helps maintain the integrity of galaxies, etc. WIMPS do not interact via the electromagnetic force (and so are "dark" or rather transparent), but they do have mass and so interact via gravity. They also interact via the weak nuclear force. Hence "weakly interacting, massive" particles.

How come something be so WIMPy and yet so useful?

I love those acronyms. Makes me want to become an astronomer.
